🏰 Lancaster Castle Lancaster Castle stands on the high ridge above the River Lune, a site fortified for nearly 2,000 years. The present castle began around 1092–1094, built by Roger de Poitou on top of earlier Roman forts. Over the centuries it became one of England’s most important centres of justice and imprisonment, witnessing witch trials, religious persecution, and more than 200 executions. Its towers, gatehouse and former prison wings survive today, making it one of the best‑preserved Norman strongholds in the North West.
