Oregon may look calm on the surface—but beneath it, some of the most powerful geological systems in North America are still moving.

In this DiscoverTube investigation, we uncover 20 major discoveries beneath Oregon, from the massive Cascadia Subduction Zone hidden offshore to rising volcanic ground, sinking coastlines, newly mapped faults, and advanced monitoring around Mount Hood.

Recent research is revealing Oregon in greater detail than ever before. A 2025 USGS study found that a major Cascadia earthquake, combined with future sea-level rise, could more than triple the area exposed to coastal flooding by 2100. Scientists are also building new 3D models of Cascadia to understand which areas could experience the strongest shaking.

Meanwhile, scientists are tracking another type of movement inland. The ground near South Sister has experienced renewed uplift, while at Mount Hood, researchers are using extremely sensitive microgravity measurements to detect subtle changes in mass beneath the volcano.
In this documentary, we explore:

🌊 The Cascadia megathrust hidden beneath the Pacific
📉 How parts of Oregon's coast could suddenly drop during a major earthquake
🌋 The renewed uplift near Three Sisters
🛰️ Satellite measurements detecting changes invisible from the ground
⚠️ Newly mapped offshore faults that could influence tsunami behavior
🏔️ New monitoring and gravity measurements around Mount Hood
🌊 The volcanic system beneath Crater Lake
🏙️ Why underground geology could influence shaking around Portland
⛰️ The landslides and infrastructure failures a Cascadia earthquake could trigger
🔬 The instruments allowing scientists to see beneath Oregon with unprecedented detail

Importantly, Oregon's major monitored Cascade volcanoes—including Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake—remain at normal background activity levels. Scientists aren't saying an eruption or major earthquake is imminent. What's changing is their ability to detect, map, and understand these enormous systems.

Oregon isn't hiding just one geological mystery.

It's sitting above an entire tectonic machine.
