Elon Musk isn’t thinking small—his long-term vision is nothing less than putting a million people on Mars. But turning that vision into reality comes with a brutal constraint: moving roughly one million tons of cargo across space. And at the core of that challenge lies one unforgiving law—the rocket equation.

Right now, even a 100-ton payload with Starship Version 3 simply isn’t enough. At that scale, building a self-sustaining civilization would be painfully slow and operationally overwhelming. To make this work within a reasonable timeframe—across those 26-month Mars launch windows—SpaceX is aiming for something far more aggressive: up to 10 launches per day, with each Starship carrying closer to 200 tons. That’s exactly where Starship Version 4 enters the picture.
But here’s the catch—full reusability makes everything harder.
Unlike expendable rockets, Starship has to carry extra hardware for landing, heat shielding, and recovery. All of that adds weight—what engineers call dry mass. Earlier versions, like Version 1 and Version 2, suffered heavily from this, with dry mass reaching around 428 tons and limiting payload to just about 50 tons to low Earth orbit, half the original target.
