Critically Endangered Hummingbird: Juan Fernandez Firecrown

The Juan Fernandez Firecrown is a critically endangered hummingbird found only on Robinson Crusoe Island in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago 481 miles off the coast of Santiago, Chile.

The bird is threatened by the island’s large feral cat population and by invasive non-native species of plants that provide inadequate nectar for the bird to survive.

The male is entirely an orange/cinnamon color with a bright golden crown and grayish brown wings

This species is the one of the best examples of sexual dimorphism in hummingbirds. The females are so different that they were once considered to be a totally different species. She is green above with an iridescent blueish purple crown. She’s white below speckled with green and black discs. The wings are greenish grey and the tail is blue-green with some white.
