📘 Description

Kipp’s apparatus is a laboratory device used for the continuous preparation of gases, especially hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). In this apparatus, iron sulphide (FeS) reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce H₂S gas.

Chemical reaction:
FeS + 2HCl → FeCl₂ + H₂S↑

The apparatus consists of three chambers that allow controlled contact between acid and solid reactant. The production of gas can be started or stopped easily by opening or closing the tap, making it very useful for laboratory demonstrations. Hydrogen sulphide is a colorless gas with a characteristic rotten-egg smell and is commonly used in qualitative salt analysis.
