What is time really?
Humanity can now build clocks so precise that tiny differences in Earth’s gravity change their measurable rate. Modern optical clocks can compare frequencies at astonishing precision, and the best systems are approaching uncertainties around the nineteenth decimal place.
Yet the deeper our measurements become, the stranger the question of time becomes.
In this documentary, we explore how atomic and optical clocks measure time, why relativity says clocks at different heights and velocities accumulate different amounts of proper time, and how precision timekeeping is becoming sensitive enough to test some of the deepest assumptions in modern physics.
General relativity treats time as part of a dynamic spacetime geometry. Quantum mechanics usually uses time differently—as an external parameter telling a quantum state when to evolve. Thermodynamics introduces another puzzle: why does time appear to have a direction? Why do we remember the past but not the future, and why does entropy overwhelmingly increase in one direction?
Then quantum gravity makes the problem even deeper.
Some approaches contain no ordinary external time parameter at the fundamental level. Relational models such as the Page–Wootters mechanism explore whether effective time can emerge from correlations between physical systems. None of this proves that time is an illusion or that it does not exist. It shows that the single word time may be covering several different physical concepts.
The documentary also explores gravitational time dilation, GPS, the arrow of time, entropy, thorium-229 nuclear clocks, quantum clocks, tests of fundamental constants, dark-matter searches, ACES aboard the International Space Station, temporal reflection, the quantum Zeno effect, and the unresolved problem of time in quantum gravity.
The most extraordinary clocks ever built have not discovered that time is breaking.
They have done something scientifically more important:
They have created rulers precise enough to test where our theories of time might finally disagree.
We can measure time better than any civilization before us.
