Chopin's Étude op. 25, No. 12 in C minor, the last piece in his opus 25 collection, is a formal study dedicated to Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult. Published in 1837 in several languages, the work features a mixture of time signatures, with the more recent editions adopting the clipped meter indicated in the manuscript and in the German version. This remarkable work features cascading arpeggios and chord progressions reminiscent of the majestic power of the sea. It bears a resemblance to Bach's Prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I.
