Nepal is battling a devastating flood disaster after a massive deluge of ice, rock and mud struck northern and central regions on August 26, reportedly triggered by a glacier collapse or avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border. The death toll has risen to 903, while 4,247 people remain missing, including security personnel and foreign nationals. Bodies have been recovered from all eight affected districts as rescue teams race against time to find survivors. Drone footage from Devighat showed two men stranded on a building severely damaged by floodwaters along the Trishuli River. Around 10,000 Nepali troops have been deployed, supported by specialists from China and India. Rescue operations are particularly focused on five hydroelectric projects, including the Upper Trishuli complex, where around 350 people were reportedly trapped inside a tunnel. The floods also damaged hydropower infrastructure and disrupted approximately 10% of Nepal’s power-generation capacity, while military helicopters delivered essential food and water supplies.
