Eileen and I invited by our local divemaster to his home and village near the earthquake torn Tanjung in north-central Lombok. This video is of this Blown Away experience that we would like to share with you. Enjoy and please like, share subscribe and leave comments!
NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!

Right, yellow helmet. Is this thing on? Yes, it is. Boy, it's a good idea to wear these things.
With you driving? Yes, it is. Oh no, I've got the bad reputation now.
After our incident in Nusa Lembongan, I got a little too aggressive. All right,
so where are we going today? Well, we're going, we hope, to our dive master's house,
but we're not sure. So his name's Herman. But he doesn't have WeChat, he doesn't have messaging.
Yep. And there's no way to contact him. But he was really kind and it's a stay off,
and he offered for us to come see his house, his village. And the earthquake damage. Yeah,
his wife is supposed to be a good cook, so we might even get some lunch. And so we're gonna,
we've got about an hour long motorcycle ride there. And it's a beautiful route, so. And a
beautiful day. And another perfect day in paradise. Look at that. Very good. Let's go. Okay,
I got the picture. Okay, brown. People are dead and thousands homeless after a magnitude seven
earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok for the second time in a week.
The quake struck in the northern part of Lombok at around 7.45pm local time,
followed by 47 aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude 5.4. Given the time of day,
many Muslims were at their evening prayers. Some got up just in time as debris crashed down.
In the light of day, the destruction goes on and on. More than 50% of homes in northern Lombok
have been destroyed. A long road ahead for a place that shares its beauty with danger.
The water is amazing out here. Like everywhere is a good snorkeling spot.
So those are the Gili Islands out there. Gili T is the one with the hump on the left,
Gili Meno, and Gili Air to the right. Absolutely stunning. This is all earthquake damage.
Hello.
Over there.
Left, right.
Okay, you wait here. You come in.
No, here.
Oh, thank you. Thank you so much.
Oh, wow. How far away or no? Is he far?
Oh, this is very, very close.
Close? Oh, good. Oh, good, good. So we're not in the wrong place. Oh, thank you so much.
You're very kind. Thank you for being so kind. What is your name?
Ketuk.
Ketuk. Eileen.
Eileen.
And I'm Brown.
Thank you.
Yeah, so nice to meet you.
No school today?
Day off, no?
Day off? Because of Eid?
Yes, the morning and Eid al-Adha.
Okay.
Ceremony in the Muslim.
In the Muslim, for Eid? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, here he is.
Hey, sorry.
How are you?
How's it going?
Good to see you, Herman.
So nice. Okay.
Thank you. Thank you. Bye. Bye.
What, they're rebuilding?
All right. Fantastic.
That's nice.
That's amazing.
Hey, so many kids.
This is beautiful.
This is my house.
Wow.
But this is behind the house.
Oh, yeah.
This is my daughter at home.
Oh, wow. Hi.
Hello.
She's 13, right?
And my wife. No, this is nine years, eight.
Nine, okay. And then you have a one-year-old.
Well, they're all on their way to go.
Hi, Herman.
Hello.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you.
Thanks for letting us see your place.
Yeah.
My house, only that wall is broken and that side as well.
Yeah.
Oh, Herman.
I'm glad that you didn't have more.
This is my daughter.
She's one years.
Hello.
Is this your dad?
This is my dad.
Oh, he looks like you.
He looks like you.
Oh, sweet.
Hello.
Your husband is very good at what he does.
Amy's a really nice guy.
Yeah, as you know.
So I'm a little fussy right now.
Okay, have a seat.
Yeah.
Oh, thank you.
It's a very small house.
Oh, that's great.
Very nice.
It's a nice neighborhood.
How long have you lived here?
I was born in here.
This is my dad's house, not my house.
This is my dad's house.
Okay, I got that.
You were born here?
Yeah, I was born here.
Okay.
My mom is already dead.
But this is about five years, six years.
Oh, wait a second.
Hello.
I like your room.
It's so cute.
Frozen.
Let it go.
I'm not finish the school.
Okay.
Because my father and mother didn't have money for that.
Sure, sure.
And then I stopped the school until junior school.
Okay.
Junior school.
And then I would go to the second school.
But my dad didn't have money.
And then I stopped school.
Yeah.
And then I have my friend to come to the village from the 17 years.
Yeah.
I don't speak English.
I don't know nothing.
You've learned so much.
And then I was working on the boat for help.
Yeah.
For them to carry the equipment, carry the tanks, everything.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then slowly, slowly.
You were a good worker.
And they let you do more and more.
So they trained you.
They, someone, who trained you for your dive master?
This is my friend as well.
Your friend diver?
But I pay for that.
You have to pay for that?
I pay myself.
Yeah.
Same company?
No, different company.
Before in the Blue Marlin.
Oh, in the Blue Marlin.
In Gili Trawangan.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And after that, then I moved to Gili Air.
In the Blue Marlin as well.
Is that who he is?
Yeah.
But now he's Blue Marine.
He changed the company.
Before Blue Marlin.
I think we used Blue Marlin.
On the northeast?
Yeah, the northeast.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's right.
We worked with them.
In February.
Yeah, February.
Yeah.
Very nice.
You know the daddy there?
Daddy, that's my cousin.
Really?
Yeah, that's my...
Daddy was our dive master.
Yeah.
The daddy house.
No way.
Really?
No way.
Daddy was our dive master.
Yeah.
He was our dive master.
Oh, yeah.
In February.
Yeah.
That guy is my friend also.
He's going to take me to the Gili Island.
It has to be God.
God, thank you.
That's the daddy house there.
That's my cousin.
Oh, my God.
That's amazing.
Do you need the sugar or not?
I'm going to put the sugar a bit less.
It's okay.
I like it black, really.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So good.
Thank you so much.
Wow, this is Lombok coffee.
This is the real deal.
I love, I love this.
I love this.
It reminds me of Turkish coffee.
You know, they mix the grinds up with it.
I'm so happy about my pictures yesterday.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Show us some of the pictures.
Can I show that?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I should have brought my iPads.
You could.
Yeah, it's beautiful, right?
Yeah, it's really nice.
I didn't see the zebra octopus in here.
Yesterday, that's why I go to the Berris Saloon.
Because I find the Berris Saloon two weeks ago.
Really?
Today, I don't find it.
Oh, it's really nice.
I love this place.
Oh, my God, it's fantastic.
And then...
Wow.
We call it the satay.
So it's like Pepe's icon.
And the coconut.
What's, how is that?
What's the name, Indonesian name for that?
Satay.
Oh, satay.
Ikan.
Ikan, okay.
Ikan is fish.
Seem like the Pepe's, like they put the Pepe's.
It's put with this, the Pepe's, yeah.
And satay means peanut.
Like peanut grill.
Okay.
I haven't had a fish satay.
I had a chicken satay.
Oh, that's amazing.
We have the other one as well.
We're waiting for the rice.
And after that, we're gonna do the eat.
This is so good.
It's spicy.
Spicy?
Very good.
The flavor is amazing.
Look at that color.
Every single meal, I get fish.
Because the fish is so fresh.
Herman, we have a YouTube channel.
And you can keep that.
So that shows you how.
So maybe, I don't know you can access it on a phone.
But we're gonna do like a little video of this visit.
And so the name of the channel is called Blown Away.
And we're eventually going to buy the sailboat.
And the name of it is Blown Away.
Mostly.
I have three daughters and three sisters.
Two older than me and one younger than me.
Okay.
I'm number three.
You're number three.
I'm three.
I'm the baby of my family.
Your wife, she doesn't dress with the hijab.
No?
Sometimes when he go to the outside.
Okay.
But home, it's okay.
All the people with no hijab.
More casual.
Hello.
Colorblading.
It's so good.
So healthy.
Hello.
How are y'all doing?
Don't be scared.
Where the dive shop was.
Once we passed the dive shop.
And they saw.
And people on motorcycles saw us.
They, you know, like, why are you here?
Why are you up here?
Yeah.
But very friendly.
Very nice.
Everyone is very, very nice.
Yeah.
And we made it here alive on the bike.
Hello.
Hey, y'all.
Silly boy.
Hey, kids.
You having a good day?
Good.
No school, right?
No school.
Yeah.
Good times.
Look at those smiles.
So good.
Oh, y'all are so cute.
So, as you can see.
This was.
Delicious.
What's the name of that again?
Herman.
I'm Herman.
Hey, Herman.
He's the best host.
Thank you.
What is the name of this again?
So it has ginger, coconut milk.
And chili.
Chili and fish.
And it also tastes like it has some lemongrass.
Yeah.
Lemongrass.
All my favorite things.
And it's super hot.
And it's cooked on these skewers.
Banana leaf.
Herman, could you explain again.
The different religions that live within your village.
And how well they get along together.
What is that?
What are the three religions here?
Three religions, yeah.
Like in the Buddhist and Hindu.
Yeah, yeah.
And Muslim.
And the Muslim.
Okay.
In the three religions here.
Yeah.
But it's sometimes that people, the three religions, marry together sometimes.
Okay.
Because in Hindu, the Hindu comes to the Muslim.
Okay.
Muslim comes to the Buddhist.
Buddhist comes to the Muslim as well.
And everyone lives in peace.
It's no problem.
No problem.
And your family, when your sister married someone who was Hindu.
Sorry, Buddhist.
It's not a problem.
Daddy, mother is Buddhist.
You know daddy?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Please, please tell him we said hello.
He will remember us.
We and Brown's daughter, Hannah, we were diving with him in February.
Only us.
One, two, three.
That's all.
Great guy.
And you can show him the video of us and he'll recognize us.
And he gave us a big shell.
A beautiful shell from underwater.
He'll remember because he, it was a special shell.
You can't forget his name and he was a really good guy.
Yeah, yeah.
He's somebody to remember.
Well.
Yeah.
Herman, do you know many people who died?
Oh, yeah.
The wall.
Cracked wall.
Oh, look at that.
Oh my gosh, look at that.
That's so cute.
Oh my gosh.
Are you scared?
Hey, mama.
Is it okay?
That's so cute.
Hello.
Hi.
He's like, I'm not convinced.
Okay, okay.
Bye-bye.
All right, hello.
Bye-bye, silly girl.
Okay, thanks.
Wow.
So still rebuilding.
Rebar.
Are they drawing Tamarin?
No, that's not Tamarin, that's a beef.
Oh, beef.
Okay.
The old-fashioned way.
Right?
Yeah.
Wow, so if you need a job being in construction.
Hello.
Hey.
She has a great smile.
Great smile.
I love your smile.
Hello.
Oh, yeah.
Thank you.
See you guys.
Bye-bye.
Oh, it's okay.
It's okay.
Thank you.
Okay.
What is that?
Okay.
Is it like a salad?
Okay.
It looks very healthy.
Hello.
So this fell down also.
All it took was 30 seconds.
So this was given by the government?
So this is a government tent.
All the one Phillip is there.
And then this before when the earthquake.
Oh, the whole village.
Yeah.
Oh, it must have been so crowded.
But it was safe.
Yeah.
That's a ripper.
A ripper is very dirty.
There's so many plastic bags.
Okay.
So you have to drink only bottled water.
We get from the people from Jakarta.
Jakarta coming to bring the water before the earthquake.
Like the noodles coming as well.
Sure.
I love all the bananas.
So they're mangoes.
Oh my gosh.
That's wonderful.
You get everything here.
The coconut trees everywhere.
Everything can grow in Indonesia.
Oh, it's so good.
Oh, that's great.
Oh, you're very talented.
You're very talented.
Oh, thank you.
It's a nice outdoor kitchen.
It's a great outdoor kitchen.
So good.
So we're getting a tour through the village.
A lot of damage from the earthquake.
But a lot of big smiles.
Hello.
Still people are rebuilding their lives.
And they have shelter now.
Wow.
Oh, look at the cow.
Oh.
Here's some other government tents.
This area was hit really hard.
So it got some immediate emergency aid.
So that people could have shelter.
Happened one year ago.
So are the fish safe to eat from this?
Or people eat fish?
No fish?
No, no fish in here.
No fish.
OK.
Oh, wow.
So do they not understand?
Normally, we get the information from there.
We must put all the rubbish in the main road with the bag.
And after that, the government come and pick it.
I don't know where it is.
Right, right.
So here are bridge parts across the river.
And the bridge is going to come through here.
You can see it being built down there.
Birds everywhere.
So birds are a favorite.
Oh, good.
They're so cute.
Parakeets.
Oh, wow.
Oh, he's so pretty.
Oh, look at the other one.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
He's beautiful.
Look at the other one as well, look.
Oh, look at this.
Yeah.
Oh.
It almost looks like he's in business.
The colors are beautiful.
I'm a pretty bird.
Does this have the egg inside this one here?
Wow, Brian, look at that one.
Look at the wings on that.
It's a tarheel bird.
That is beautiful.
Oh, hello.
That's a tarheel bird.
Oh, my gosh.
I make a different bird.
OK.
Oh, he has eggs.
Yeah.
So does he breed them?
Yeah.
OK.
Wow.
Wow, that's amazing.
Oh, my gosh.
Lots of chili in there.
So good.
Some nice tomato, onion, chili.
Garlic.
Oh, that is going to be so yummy.
You like to cook?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Me too.
It's fun.
Hello.
Oh, my gosh.
Wow.
Some good local food.
The best.
Sticky rice.
Wow, look at this.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Just one, maybe one small spoon.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Perfect, perfect.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Thank you.
Oh, it looks so good.
Perfect.
Thank you.
Brian, you need more?
Oh, sure.
Thank you.
That's perfect.
I only did two dabs.
She did three dabs.
It looks so good.
So that's a vegetable, vegetable dish.
That's gatu gatu.
OK.
And that is, what's the name of that?
This is, we call it like, almost seem like a tap Thai.
OK.
Amazing.
This is amazing.
So the gatu gatu.
Taste that right there.
Tastes like spinach.
Has tomato, chili.
The flavor is amazing.
This is delicious.
Amazing.
And then we have more.
More pepes.
Pepes satay.
Right there.
Wow.
Now I know why you eat so much.
And then this dish has vegetables and beef in it.
It's really good.
All on top of the rice.
But he make the food like a little bit of chili when we cook.
You can try it.
OK.
Herman, thank you so much.
You're the best.
You and your wife are the best hosts.
Thank you, Herman.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Thank you.
Oh, look at the food was eaten up.
Yeah, yeah, we'll see you tomorrow.
Rest up.
OK.
Super dad and super husband.
OK.
So good.
Hey, hey.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, we really appreciate your hospitality.
You have such a wonderful family.
Yeah, I know I'm a scary man.
Everybody thinks I'm scary.
Oh, yeah.
I know.
So nice to meet you.
Yeah.
Bye.
Wow, what an amazing experience in this village.
Really incredible.
The hospitality of our dive master.
Such great kindness.
Careful.
Oh, look at the fighting cocks.
Maybe inside?
Where do we put gasoline?
OK.
Oh, OK.
Thank you.
Hello.
That's the gas pump.
Hey, buddy.
Whoa.
OK, I got the picture.
OK, brown.
So we had an incredible day traveling up to see Herman.
It was a really great bike ride, a scooter ride.
A little scary at times, but.
Crazy, crazy traffic.
Crazy traffic.
And as you can see, we met a lot of great people along the way who helped us find Herman
and his village.
And the time with Herman was so incredibly special and culturally so insightful.
I think what impresses me most about Herman, he told us that when he was a child,
he had to drop out of formal education.
I think it was age eight because his parents didn't have enough money to send him to school.
And he was determined to just better himself, even without formal education.
So he learned English on his own.
He started working on the boat when he was 13, I think, learning how to just carry tanks.
And he was the anchor boy.
So he would help set the anchor.
And just doing grunt labor for the dives.
And then they were really impressed by his work ethic.
And he was sponsored to become a dive master.
He had to pay for that himself.
So he saved up money over a long period of time.
He's just an incredible man.
And over that time, he really got good at his English.
Yes, improved his English.
Started on his own without a formal English education.
And his English is nearly flawless.
He doesn't speak with any accent.
It's really incredible.
He's just the sweetest, sweetest man.
What a gift.
He's been a great gift on this trip.
Not only above water, but underwater.
He is amazing at finding just about everything.
And we can't wait to share him with you.
So just stay tuned.
And you'll see all about our trip.
This is the end of the video.
This is the end of that video, the day with Herman.
They've already seen all about him.
Oh, you've already seen.
Oh, sorry.
Whoops.
My bad.
We'll do it again.
She's the film director.
Obviously not me.
I'm the plumeria frangipani picker.
That's all I do.
We also want to give huge thanks to Herman.
Thanks, Herman.
He's not on the internet and not on YouTube.
But we absolutely love him.
And if you come to Lombok, you really need to dive with Herman.
And we'll put his information below.
Or contact us, OK?
We've got to carefully select who's going to get to get to see Herman.
Comment if you're interested.
And yeah, we're really impressed with the meal his wife cooked as well.
That was absolutely amazing.
She made some some Indonesian traditional dishes for us.
And it was really fun to see how they eat on the floor, just on a mat.
They really don't have any furniture in the house.
It's a very simple, very simple.
Just really interesting pieces that I think we're just going to
that are going to almost like Pandora's box.
They're just going to keep giving over time as we think about it and talk about it.
And it's a simple life, but a good life.
And the tourism's really been hurt for quite a while.
But don't be afraid to come here.
The people are warm and friendly.
Wonderful.
