This New Phone Has a Subwoofer...
Sep 2, 2026
So we got the new Poco F9 Ultra in front of me.
First thing I notice on the box here,
sound by Bose, ooh, wow, wow, wee.
This one is in dark cherry.
16 gigs RAM and 1024 gigabyte ROM.
Now with the Ultra in the name,
they are trying to send a message here
that this is a flagship worthy comparison.
Now first thing we've got is a case and a cable.
This is just to get you up and running,
although I noticed this is a rigid one.
It isn't like a flexible TPU.
So this is a little nicer
than some of the included cases already.
It has a slightly smoked or like matte finish.
We've also got our USB cable.
This is gonna be a C to A USB cable
and a little bit of paperwork.
Here's that dark cherry finish on the device.
Whoa, look at the speaker unit on that thing.
Sound by Bose, that has to be one of the most distinctive
and substantial speaker areas
that I've ever seen on a device.
The other thing I'm noticing right away
is that even though this platform,
this plateau kind of emerges from the back of the device,
the cameras themselves do not.
So lay on the table is unbelievable.
Zero wobble.
You get a little bit of an angle to it,
but look at that.
I'm actually a person who does every so often
use my phone that way, so that's pretty cool.
I think that is some nice design work.
This dark cherry color venturing into the purple realm,
which we don't see a lot of.
Limited branding, just Poco right there
and then that's pretty much it.
Type C, our SIM tray, power, volume rocker,
a slab style design.
Will it stand up on its own?
I don't know.
Why does this matter?
I'm not sure.
I mean, it definitely doesn't matter,
but it's always a thing I'm curious about.
Okay, it takes a little more work than usual,
but it is slabby enough to actually stand up on its own
if that's important to you.
Mainly what it means
is you get a really substantial grip on it
and this just seems to be a trend in the industry.
This is what people are looking for.
Construction, metal and glass.
I mean, that's really all I'm feeling.
I don't feel any plastic components
and it's cool to the touch.
And I also like the fact that this dark cherry
has a matte finish to it
so that it isn't accumulating
a tremendous number of fingerprints.
However, you could always slap this guy on
and that kind of shows you what I'm talking about
with that matte finish.
See that?
It's not completely see-through.
Maybe that helps with fingerprints too,
but anyway, that's what it's like when you put it on
and why wouldn't you want a case
to just get you up and running in the package?
Who's gonna argue against that?
Here is our screen to body ratio.
Expand the brightness range
and adjust brightness automatically under bright conditions.
Yeah, let's do that.
Advanced textures, refresh rate option, standard or high.
It will dynamically adjust up to 185 Hertz.
However, for power consumption,
when you don't need 185 Hertz,
I mean, you know how this works, it's dynamic.
What it means for you is very smooth and fast refresh
and I can tell now with the brightness,
it's unbelievable on the overhead.
That is super hot.
You have to adjust your camera
in order to deal with the brightness.
It is very bright.
Okay, now I have high hopes for this Bose speaker.
Maybe they weren't lying.
Big speaker unit.
Now the thing is, that's not the only spot.
Interesting.
It's like an extra bass, just an extra sound port.
Earpiece is still producing volume.
Lower part of the phone, another speaker unit.
So it's bass.
The majority of the bass is coming from there.
Guys, it's a loud,
I mean, you can tell how loud I'm having to speak.
It is a loud speaker unit.
If you use your smartphone as your main speaker
and you just got to deal with what your phone has,
you're not gonna be disappointed with what this phone has.
Just out of curiosity, because I'm like, that is loud,
but how loud is it really?
I don't know.
Let's check.
You can see when it comes to wobble,
obviously we've got tremendous wobble on this guy.
So there's that one.
Honestly, they both sound good.
This is a flagship phone.
This S26 Ultra, this is gonna cost you a few bucks.
I mean, this thing is definitely kicking out some sound
and it's kicking it in a number of directions
you don't typically see.
Like often you'll have two separate ports,
but like having a third one here,
trying to add some low end, it's interesting.
Even if you have it on the table,
because it's up firing from these two,
but like a lot of the low end is coming out of this.
Spending way too much time on this speaker here,
but I mean, they're the ones that did the Bose partnership
and I haven't seen a grill placed in this location, so.
All right, let's go over the full list of specs.
It's got a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
That's a good start.
80, 50 milliamp hour battery.
It's got put it ahead of a lot of other devices.
It'll charge 100 watt wired and 50 watt wireless,
but it's also got up to 27 watts of reverse charging.
So you can charge other devices at 27 watts
using this device,
or up to 22.5 wireless watts of reverse charging.
200 megapixel ultra clear main camera,
which features optical image stabilization.
And you've also got what they're calling
a flagship level five times periscope telephoto,
also with optical image stabilization.
The periscope camera is 50 megapixels at F3.
It'll give you about 120 millimeter equivalent
when it comes to focal length.
You've also got a 50 megapixel ultra wide
and on the front, that's a 32 megapixel selfie camera.
The aperture there is big enough
that we can actually get a pretty significant focus fall off.
Like if you look at the bokeh there, look at that.
Dealing with a big enough aperture.
Pretty vibrant greens going on.
The display measurement 6.9 inches,
185 Hertz ultra bright AMOLED display.
Of course, with that 185 Hertz,
it's capable of 185 FPS gaming.
You're looking at gamers.
You wanna have a big battery,
you're looking again at gamers.
So it makes a lot of sense here to try and play some games.
See if this guy heats up.
157 FPS, 162 FPS.
Yeah, dude.
What do you got?
This weapon, geez louise.
Oh, doesn't matter, he had a shotgun.
You saw me playing Call of Duty.
That's up to 165 frames,
not because of a limitation of the device.
And there are other games obviously
that support up to 185,
which is taking full advantage of the display capability
and the performance capability.
Holy guacamole.
So 165 is already the premium tier
when it comes to frame rate for mobile gaming.
Oh, first place.
First place, I mean, it was never a doubt really.
Of course, we've got other enhancements
in the gaming section here.
I'm on the boost mode right now.
You see CPUs at like 25%.
If I click on performance,
I can do custom picture priority or frame rate priority.
I mean, look at this.
Network speed boost.
Obviously I can also turn off notifications
and things when I'm gaming.
A lot of configuration available to you
for anyone who enjoys gaming on their device.
And when you've got 8,000 milliamp hours to work with,
like look at me, I'm at 84 power there.
Max out the brightness.
You can rip some frames on that, no doubt.
The sound by Bose, the way they describe it,
symmetrical stereo speakers with an independent subwoofer.
So my intuition was correct there.
The rear unit is an additional subwoofer.
Game lighting effects during Call of Duty.
During combat, the rear light flashes three times
over 1.5 seconds when the player fires.
Whoa, it's synced to my gunfire that was going on.
Anyway, you can have it strictly dynamic like that,
but there's some different settings for it.
Obviously you can have it light up as well
for phone calls and things.
It's just a nice little added functionality there.
I don't know, you wanna cut the lights?
That's a cool thumbnail, honestly.
So the model that I'm testing is $1,199.
However, there's going to be an early bird price of $1,059.
And if you don't need the one terabyte of storage,
the early bird price goes down to $799 with the same RAM.
And the entry model, the 12 plus 256,
the early bird starts at $729 for that one.
Obviously a lot less than some of the other flagships
that are out there.
What can I say?
I mean, they've packed a lot in here at that price point
and they wanna make a major play.
They wanna make a major statement, you know?
I mean, in some categories,
just looking at the spec sheet,
like 8,000 plus milliamp hour,
charging at 100 watts, 50 watt wireless charging,
the collaboration with Bose, which you heard the sound.
I mean, as far as smartphones go,
like it's giving you quite a bit of volume.
This decision to have everything flush
in the camera area there for this effect,
which you just don't see too many doing.
It's a lot more like this these days.
There's no lay on the table element to it.
I don't know how big of a deal that is.
I mean, you don't typically lay your phone on the table,
but just even the thought.
We've got the latest Snapdragon.
We've got a really fast refresh on the display.
And we have this beautiful dark cherry color
and it'll stand on its own,
which I did on the first try that time.
Let me just dress it up with a little plant and a dollar bill
because you're gonna save.
You're gonna have a couple extra dollar bills
if you go for the F9 Ultra.
