Listening sounds simple. Almost nobody does it. While the other person is speaking, most of us are quietly assembling the reply, waiting for the gap. Eckhart Tolle suggests something different. You do not need to prepare what you are going to say. Listen, stay aware of yourself as the presence that is listening, and let the response come on its own. It will be the right one. When you listen like that, you are giving someone the gift of presence. You are acknowledging their being. This changes what happens in a relationship. Usually one conditioned self reacts to another conditioned self, and before long there is conflict. That is true between two people, and it is true between nations. But if you stay connected to the alert stillness underneath your thinking, something else comes through. Empathy. Compassion. What the Dalai Lama simply calls kindness. Asked about his religion, he did not say Buddhism. He said his religion is kindness. And there is something further you can sense in another person. Behind their conditioning is their being, and it is one with yours. That recognition is the end of the delusion of absolute separateness. The other stops being entirely other. That is love, in the truest meaning of the word. An outflow of goodwill toward someone who is no longer separate from you. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
