This 1937 Modernist Masterpiece Still Feels Ahead of Its Time | The Watzek House Tour in Oregon

We continue our Portland series with a visit to the iconic Watzek House, designed and built in 1937 by renowned Oregon architect John Yeon. Widely considered one of the most important early modern homes in the Pacific Northwest, the Watzek House reflects his deep sensitivity to landscape, materials, and light, principles that helped shape a distinctly regional approach to modern architecture.

In this film, we sit down with Richard Louis Brown, the homeowner of the Watzek House, who happened to be his partner until his passing. Richard shares personal reflections on living in this historic home, offering a rare and intimate perspective on the legacy of both the house and the architect behind it.

Today, the house is under the care of the University of Oregon, generously donated by Richard with the hope that it will continue to educate and serve as a source of inspiration for students and others. The house was also carefully restored by the university, ensuring its preservation for future generations while honoring its original vision.
