
The 300,000-Year-Old Mystery of DENISOVANS in Tibet

New evidence from the Tibetan Plateau may push the story of the Denisovans far deeper into the past than previously imagined. At Quesang, fossilized handprints and footprints preserved beside ancient hot springs have been dated to roughly 169,000–226,000 years ago—and some proposed age estimates extend toward 300,000 years. But who left them?
In this video, we examine the mysterious Quesang impressions, the Denisovan mandible from Xiahe, ancient proteins and DNA recovered from Baishiya Karst Cave, and the archaeological evidence showing that archaic humans repeatedly occupied one of Earth’s most extreme environments. We also explore how the Denisovans became adapted to high altitude, whether the Tibetan Plateau served as a long-term Denisovan homeland, and what these discoveries reveal about the deep human history of Central and East Asia.
Could Denisovans—or other humans—have reached Tibet 300,000 years ago? The evidence is fragmentary, but it is beginning to transform our understanding of where these ancient humans lived, how early they adapted to extreme elevations, and how much of their story still lies beneath the Tibetan Plateau.
