In the mid-1970s, two brothers farming 60,000 acres in Montana hit a wall no existing tractor could get them past. So they asked a small manufacturer to build them the biggest tractor physically possible — no compromises.

The result was the Big Bud 747. Empty, it weighs around 100,000 pounds. Fully loaded and working the field, that number climbs to roughly 135,000 pounds — about 60 tons moving across the ground. Its Detroit Diesel V16 engine originally produced 760 horsepower, later upgraded to as much as 1,100 horsepower. Only one was ever built at this exact size.

Nearly 50 years later, people still argue whether modern quad-track tractors have actually surpassed it — or whether being first still counts for more than raw specs.
