🌲 COAST REDWOOD — Sequoia sempervirens
One of the world's great tree giants reveals a fascinating contradiction: enormous natural scale can coexist with an architecture that can be interpreted in miniature. We look at its trunk, bark, branching, and unusual regenerative growth to understand what remains when the scale changes.
🌲 ATLAS CEDAR — Cedrus atlantica
Its natural branching architecture can develop ascending primary branches, horizontal secondary branches, and changing crown forms as the tree matures. These structures help explain why its silhouette can feel surprisingly familiar when viewed as bonsai.
🌺 BOUGAINVILLEA
A completely different starting point. Some Bougainvillea are woody climbers rather than conventional trees, yet their woody stems and branching can be interpreted into a convincing miniature tree form. Here, bonsai becomes less about copying nature and more about understanding and framing its character.
