At a press conference following the SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that the Russian occupation army was supposedly 12 kilometers from the Ukrainian city of Sumy. Prior to this, he claimed that the Russian occupiers were 10 kilometers from this town. Putin claims that the Russian occupation army is continuing to establish a so-called "security zone" along the Russian-Ukrainian border in the border areas of the Sumy region. According to him, the Russian occupiers are 12 kilometers away from the Sumy ring road. The Russian dictator made the statement about "12 kilometers to Sumy" on September 1, 2026, in Bishkek after the SCO summit. Prior to this, on June 29, 2026, he stated that the Russian army, which was "advancing rapidly," was supposedly "somewhere around 10.5 kilometers" away from Sumy.
However, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Russian army was able to capture only a few border settlements in the Sumy direction. Some settlements allegedly captured by Russian occupiers are under the full control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. According to a map from the Ukrainian analytical project DeepState, the enemy is currently approximately 17 kilometers from the administrative border of Sumy. Media also reported that dictator Vladimir Putin is no longer in control of the war against Ukraine.
Once a staunch supporter of the war against Ukraine, renowned Z-speaking writer Zakhar Prilepin made a frank statement. He spoke of the terrible price Russia and Ukraine are paying for the so-called "SVO." Prilepin stated that the war against Ukraine has already claimed the lives of millions of people and will soon equal the number of casualties suffered during the Great Patriotic War.
"We're still paying the price of war. A huge price! Think about it for a second. We had the Great Patriotic War, a pitch-black war, we were simply buried under corpses, we lost 5-6 million of our soldiers, the rest of the dead were civilians. Just look at current events. I'll round it up and say that Russia and Ukraine lost 2 million people in this war. 2 million people! And I assure you, if it continues for a while longer, and it will, we'll actually reach that level... Exactly the same thing is happening now! Exactly the same thing! The same order of numbers, the same order of deaths, the same killing machine at work," Prilepin said.
