Athens vs Sparta: The Dark Truth About Ancient Greek War

In the centuries following the collapse of Mycenaean civilization, Greece entered a long and uncertain age. Cities shrank, trade vanished, and writing disappeared from daily life. Yet from this darkness, new communities slowly emerged—independent city-states known as poleis. Among them were two settlements that would come to define the fate of Greece itself: Athens and Sparta. At first glance, they shared much in common. Both spoke Greek. Both worshipped the Olympian gods—Zeus, Athena, Apollo. Both celebrated the heroic past preserved in the epics of Homer. But beneath the surface, they were shaped by very different environments.
