When you think Toyota, you think Land Cruiser.
When you think Ford, you think Bronco.
Yeah, when you think Jeep, you of course think Wrangler.
And when you think Land Rover, you think Defender.
But these aren't just normal versions of these iconic names.
These are the top dogs.
And Dad, what are we doing today?
We're going to take them off road.
Not quite.
I thought I had that right.
Not quite.
Stay tuned. This is going to be a fun one.
I have a question, Tommy.
Why are we racing off-roaders?
Well, we already took them off-road.
We've got a great video over at alltfl.com.
And we got about 1,000 comments of people asking us to find out
which top dog off-roader is fastest in the quarter mile.
So now we're on the quarter mile.
And we're going to find out what is what.
Now, first of all, Dad, this Bronco Raptor, 418 horsepower,
440 pound-feet of torque from a 3-liter twin-turbo V6.
Well, I've got 326 horsepower, but 465 pound-feet of torque.
Drag racing is all about torque, Tommy.
Plus, I've only got, you know, 33s versus...
What are you rolling on there?
Those are like 400s?
37s.
This is an off-roader.
We shouldn't be doing this.
But it does have a sport mode.
I've got the exhaust in Baja.
Let's do a rev battle and find out which one sounds best.
Before we do that, I also have KO3s.
And, you know, those are much better than KO2s for drag racing.
We're on a beautifully smooth surface here at the airfield.
And we both have automatic four-wheel drives.
But let's do the rev battle and find out which one sounds better.
Yeah, the Ford sounds better.
There's just no doubt about that, especially in the Baja mode.
It's got a little bit of a throaty sound.
That Toyota sounds a little Dyson-y.
Yeah, this engine is anything but loud.
The other thing I would say, Tommy,
I think there was only one comment that said drag race, though.
Just one.
So let's be honest here.
We're journalists after all.
Real journalism going on here.
That's what we're all about.
Uh-huh.
All right, let's do our quarter mile here and we'll see what's what.
Are you feeling good about it?
I'm going to put myself into sport mode.
I almost forgot.
Now I'm feeling good about it.
Oh, good launch in the Ford.
10-speed automatic.
Bursting shifts.
Uh-oh, he's apparently twerked.
Doesn't win races because he's way ahead of me.
Wow, it's like it's in a different zip code already.
Come on, Toyota.
I got you in sport mode.
That Toyota is so slow.
It's a little, uh, it's a little Sunday cruise-like.
And across the line at a blistering 75 miles an hour.
Did you get the rare twosome, dual-lane cruiser?
What the hell is that?
That was across the line at a rarefied 74 miles an hour, Tommy.
I did a 15.24 in the Raptor,
which is about right for a mile above sea level at 100 degree day.
It's not even close between these two.
And it should be considering how much torque that Toyota has.
Well, 0-60 in 9.7, quarter mile 17.12.
0-60 in 7, which is pretty good for this massive 37-inch tall tired beast.
So I'm pretty happy with that.
Do you think that there's like a hidden sport mode in here somewhere?
You know, like extra sport?
I think that's called the Lexus GX.
Or LX.
I guess I see you brought along an overpowered shopping cart.
You know, it's better to have a gold overpowered shopping cart
than a white overpowered shopping cart.
My friend, I've got independent front suspension,
which was something developed about 100 years ago
that Jeep hasn't quite figured out yet.
But you know, that's fine.
You can say your rock crawling thing is more important.
Today is drag strip day.
And I think that this Ford may surprise you
with twin turbos at 6,000 feet above sea level.
Well, I've got 470 horsepower, my man,
and 470 pound foot of torque and two more cylinders.
It does sound amazing.
Play the clip.
I don't come anywhere near that sound.
But you also have an 8-speed.
I have a 10-speed.
I've got a sport mode.
You don't have a sport mode.
So, you know, let's see what happens.
Let's see what happens.
So I'm hearing more grip is what you're saying.
I'm hearing a lot more tire to turn.
That's what I'm saying.
All right, let's do this.
All right.
Come on, Ford.
Oh, come on, Ford.
Good start.
Oh, yeah.
Bye-bye, my man.
Oh, you can hear the Jeep from inside the Bronco.
In my rearview mirror, this engine sounds so good.
Oh, he's just pulling away.
That is very cool.
I'm sorry I called it a shopping cart.
Seeing that Jeep do that, that's pretty epic.
Oh, yeah.
That was fun.
How'd you do?
So quarter mile, 14.63, 0 to 60, 6.30.
0 to 60 for money that time, right around 7 again, quarter mile, 15.3.
So Ford's consistent, but it's not as quick as the Jeep.
Interesting that even at a mile above sea level,
turbos don't make up for good old American displacement.
You know what I need is the performance tune.
Ford has a performance tune.
It gets you like 455 horsepower, but over 500 pound-feet of torque.
That's what I need right now, 536 torque.
I don't have it.
I don't have the tune, though.
No, you don't need any of that, Tommy.
What you need is a Coyote.
Damn straight.
That's the truest thing you could have said.
I need a Coyote.
This is a brand new Wrangler, but you may be thinking to yourself,
why would I want an extended warranty on a brand new Wrangler?
Well, I can tell you why, because when this warranty runs out,
you're going to want peace of mind.
You're going to want to know that if something blows on this very expensive
470 horsepower Jeep, that you'll be covered.
And by using Granger warranty, that's exactly what you'll get.
Just click on the link below.
Sure, we can do a roll race.
Maybe my 10 speed will kick down faster than your antiquated eight.
You know, everybody knows gold is faster than white.
Yeah, you do the faster color, but none of us have red painted tow hooks,
which is going to be a problem if we get stuck.
All right, so 30 mile an hour roll, automatic mode.
We'll see which one kicks down fastest and gets to the quarter mile first.
All right, here I come.
Let's do it.
There's 20, 25, and 30 in 3, 2, 1, go.
Oh, he's got me for now.
Come on forward.
Build that boost.
Oh, I'm actually out ahead of him.
Come on, I'm pulling away.
Come on, Ford, stay with it.
Come on, baby.
70 miles an hour.
80 miles an hour.
It's neck and neck, but he's pulling ahead.
90 miles an hour.
99 miles an hour.
I was worried about hitting the top speed limiter,
because these cars do have off-road tires and they are limited in their top speeds.
This transmission calibration is really excellent in sport mode,
and it had me right where I needed to be.
So I didn't even need a downshift.
I just built some boost and took off.
And I had you through probably 75 miles an hour.
But yeah, there's no replacement for displacement.
Yeah, I mean, this has double your displacement.
Double, that little three liter is just so puny.
I got to say, for being half, less than half as big, it did pretty well.
Speaking of which, actually, there is a replacement for displacement.
Let me go get our next contender.
For the sake of our viewers, Tommy, let me just be very clear about this.
For that price of that Defender Octa you just rolled up in,
I could have two of these 392s, two, plus a slightly used TJ.
Sounds like a lot of excuses for someone who's about to lose,
because this is the new top dog Land Rover.
This is called the Defender Octa.
It's got a 626 horsepower, 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 from BMW.
590 pound feet of torque.
It's got 12.7 inches of ground clearance.
And I've got resonator for the radio built into my backrests.
So ventilated seats on, premium sound up.
You're about to lose.
All right, just one question.
How much does it weigh?
6,000 pounds.
How many pounds?
6,000 pounds.
Which is a lot.
But listen, you got this level of luxury.
You gotta have a little bit of mass.
There's no way around it.
And I got carbon fiber on the interior.
So it kind of balances out.
I better be ahead of you,
because that's going to start flying off that thing with the brand reputation.
Ouch.
Unnecessary.
Coming from a Jeep driver?
That's a bold statement.
Well, it doesn't matter.
You'll be so far behind me.
I won't be able to hear your complaints.
So should we do this thing?
Yeah.
Too soon, Tommy?
Too soon, I guess.
All right, let's do this.
I'm in the dynamic mode on the Octa setting.
Launch control active.
Oh, he's got a good launch.
But it doesn't matter.
Uh-oh.
He's got me.
Wow, look at this thing go.
It should not be this quick for what it is.
Over 7,000 RPM redline.
He's got me by a lot.
But this sounds better.
Oh, boy.
I mean, that's a fast vehicle, that Jeep.
And it just left it for dead.
Hey, I think your spare tire fell off about halfway down the strip.
That was a 13-second flat,
which I don't think gives you any reason to criticize me.
And unreal performance out of something this big and heavy.
It doesn't sound as good as a Jeep.
There's no way around that.
But it is such a performance machine.
I mean, for what this thing can do off-road,
you should watch the video over at Old TFL.
It shouldn't be this quick on-road.
All right, 14.6, quarter mile, 0 to 60, 6.28.
0 to 60 in this thing.
4.72 at a mile above sea level.
Fast.
That's a fast machine right there.
I got to give it to you, Ben Auxis.
It's very surprising, both on and off-road.
But then again, for $165,000, it should be, Tommy.
We'll do a roll race and then find out what's what.
Okay, are you ready to do this?
Yeah, let's go.
All right, let's go to 30, 20, 25, in 3, 2, 1, go.
All right, let me see how much I should adjust my ventilated seat.
I got to start, and at least it sounds better.
My four-zone climate control, I'll turn that on,
make sure they're comfortable back there.
That's quite good.
It does slow down when you get into the 90s.
93.
Should I open up the suburb while I'm on it?
Maybe I will.
Oh, I'm in a drag race.
I just won.
It's just like it's a no-brainer.
This thing is so effortless at what it does.
100 miles an hour in a 392 on a closed course.
Professional driver.
You have been defeated, my friend.
Hey, what was your top speed?
I got up to 100 there.
112, baby.
So if I had the street tires, they could be going a lot quicker,
but this is what makes this Octa cool is the off-road ones.
But I heard to the grapevine you've lined up another surprise contestant.
You know, I figured if we're going to be racing off-roaders,
I should have, let's say, a more
feasible Stellantis off-roader take on that Octa.
So yeah, got a bit of a surprise.
All right, I'm confident.
I am confident.
I wouldn't be if I were you.
Case, what is this wheelbarrow you've brought along to my sophisticated drag race?
It's the brand new Ram TRX with 777 horsepower,
which you'll notice is quite a bit more than the Defender that you're driving.
It's also the size of a house, though.
Which means extra traction.
I love it.
Give me a quick rev.
You got an alternator pulling out?
Why is it whining like that?
As you know, that's the sound that turbos fear
because it's a supercharged 6.2 liter V8, bigger V8 than yours,
and a supercharger means immediate power.
This is the Boston tea party all over again.
I had this whole race, this whole video down and nailed,
and then you have to come in and throw my tea in the harbor.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, we'll see if the Defender Octa can stave off the mighty TRX.
Okay, so I'm going into dynamic launch,
so Octa dynamic mode, into sport on the transmission,
traction control off, draggy on.
I'm ready.
Gentlemen, the video crew has split exactly down the middle
about which one's going to win.
So half of them think the supercharger's going to win,
the other half think the turbocharger's going to win.
Well, let's find out.
Glasses on.
Are you ready?
Come on, Octa.
This TRX better win.
Oh, Tommy beat me on the launch a little bit there.
God, I got a better launch.
And I don't think I can reel him in.
He's still pulling away.
Is he catching up?
No, he's not.
But not by much.
Maybe he is.
Come on, Defender.
Come on, BMW power.
Brutal.
That was decently close.
Well, I took you on the get-go.
You want to give it another launch?
Yeah, we can give it one more.
That was a 13.38, 0-60 in five flat at a mild of sea level,
which is, you know, less than you might expect for 626 horsepower,
but it does weigh 6,000 pounds.
So she's a little heavy.
Interesting, because this truck just did a bunch of drag races
against some other really fast trucks.
If you want to watch that, you can check it out on TFL Truck.
And this last round got a 13.47,
which is a little bit slower of a time than what I was getting,
because this truck's starting to build some heat.
Best time I've gotten in this so far today is about a 13.31.
So I have today gotten a better time than what you just had in the Octa.
But we'll see if it can still pull that off after heat soaking.
Sounds like the Americans don't know how to build a cooling system.
Actually, I have a race prep cooling system that I can use
if you have five minutes to spare, which I don't think we do.
What the hell is that?
Something that the Land Rover's not capable of.
Come on, Land Rover, you can do it again.
Oh, even launch!
Okay, there we go.
Come on, Octa!
No!
Tried to jump Tommy on the launch a little bit just to give myself a chance.
They really are neck and neck.
It's just whoever leaves the line first.
The truck is ahead!
85, 86, 90 miles an hour, 95.
Oh, it's gonna be a photo finish!
Well, I think it may have taken me by just a nose,
but these two are about as close as you can possibly get.
It's interesting.
It's pretty much whoever leaves the start first,
because the last time I was asleep at the switch a little bit,
so I decided to try and give myself an edge and leave a little early.
Yeah, they are really neck and neck.
Again, the best time I've seen on this truck so far is at 13.301
at a mile above sea level, which is a pretty good time.
It may be marginally better than the Land Rover,
but honestly, these last two runs have been 13.47s.
So as this truck starts to heat up,
it's probably a little bit slower than the Defender Octa,
but they are neck and neck.
You're not going to believe it, but that last run was exactly a 13.31.
Interesting, yeah.
So these two, they could not be any closer.
Let's do a roll race, and then we'll crown a victor.
There's a sad reality with this Octa,
because I'm running the magnificent 20-inch wheels with off-road Duratrac tires.
It does lose out a little bit on performance compared to the street tires,
about 0.2 a second in the 0-60, and a lot of top speed,
because the top speed on street tires is 155,
top speed on off-road tires is about 100.
So we'll see what happens in this roll race.
Yeah, you might hit your speed limiter.
Well, might.
All right, let's accelerate up to 30 here.
At 30 in 3, 2, 1, go.
Oh, yeah.
A little bit of time.
It took the Defender to downshift.
See, the supercharger takes off quick.
There's 70 miles an hour.
Whereas the Land Rover has to build boost.
85, 90 miles an hour, 98, 100.
But he's right there.
106, 112 on the speed limiter.
You must have been going over 100 at the end there.
Speed limiter is 112 with the off-road tires I just learned,
and it, like, hit a wall.
So we know exactly how fast the Defender goes before it calls it quits.
Yeah, I was going to say I was at 110 and you were right there.
You're catching up a little toward the end,
but it's the nice thing about having a supercharger is it takes no time to build boost.
So off the line, this truck is very quick to downshift and get into the power,
which makes it an absolute monster if you're trying to do a passing maneuver.
I don't know if you had full Boston tea party on my British ass,
but you definitely put up a great fight.
Here's the other thing, though.
This truck is about 100 grand.
How much is a Land Rover?
160,000.
Oh, you almost said it as if that was a question that that was definitive.
It's 160 starting.
How much is that one?
Yeah, OK, it's a lot of money.
It's a lot of money, but you only have three dimensional suspension
and this has six dimensional suspension.
So case closed.
I don't even know what that means.
So tell me, what's more fun?
Off-roading or drag racing off-roaders?
Well, it's off-roading off-roaders, I have to say.
And I'm a little worried.
You know why I'm worried?
Why are you worried?
I'm worried the Toyota people are going to send a few bricks through your window specifically.
So be sure to send hate mail.
No, I'm kidding.
Next time, maybe we should bring one of the Lexuses with a little bit more oomph.
But this is a great race.
That Land Rover is epic.
The Jeep epic.
The Ford is very good for what it is.
And the Toyota is a Land Cruiser.
This will go forever.
I don't know, dude.
I had a huge smile on my face when I was drag racing that 392.
There is a lot of fun to be had by doing things with cars that you're not supposed to.
Guys, let us know what you think in the comments section below.
Head on over to OldTFL.com.
We've got more videos for you coming soon.
Yeah, and if you want to see these off-road, we've done that as well.
We'll see you next time.
Ciao.
