A family of seven faces a series of hardships, from a disastrous ski trip marred by illness and car trouble to the daily stress of managing five children in a deteriorating home. Despite financial struggles and a crumbling kitchen, the couple maintains a strong bond rooted in mutual support and small, romantic gestures.
We're getting ready to take a trip. We need to all be getting along and being nice.
We have saved some money, which has caused us to put some projects on hold, mainly the kitchen,
but we feel that it's very important to rejuvenate ourselves, so we're excited about the trip.
We need to all work together as a team to get ourselves packed up,
so I need you guys to go in your rooms. I need you to get your stuff and bring it in here so
we can try to make seven people's things fit in the suitcases. All right, Alex, quit looking at
Anna. Anna, quit looking at Alex. This is super exciting because we're getting to go skiing for
the very first time, okay? So I want everybody to have good attitudes. I want everybody to have lots
of fun. Dad is at the doctor. He should be home here shortly, and so get your clothes together,
okay? Can we do that? Can we do that, Alex? Can we do it nicely?
Alex, can we do it nicely?
Well, I put my fingers on the table and I started laughing.
Okay, are your fingers okay? No. Do we need to go to the doctor?
Yeah. We do? You need to go to the doctor. I just want to get away from Anna.
Look, don't be around Anna. It's fine. All right, you're fine. Let's go. Go get your clothes.
Go get your stuff. Geez, this family's falling apart. Hey, Amber, where are you? Hey, dear.
What did the doctor say? They took two x-rays of me and said I have pneumonia.
I got a cloud on the bottom of one of my lungs and I need to stay out of cold air for
five to six days and take it easy. I was looking forward to being able to ski with the kids,
but as of now, I'm stuck indoors. It really stinks, though. It does. It stinks very bad.
It's like having a chance to get away from this place, to chill out and take it easy.
To have fun is not how I wanted to do it. But hopefully, this will work.
By the time I start feeling better, it'll be time to go back to work. Time to go back to work.
I bought some snacks and stuff, too, so I didn't just bounce on your list, which I never do.
I know you don't. I saw the bill for that. My list definitely wasn't $121 worth.
Oh, yeah, and we just got the gas bill, too. How much is it? $421. Good God. Yeah, so...
Holy crap. We need to budget, so I will be cooking at this, and...
All right, well, we need to... This vacation is not getting off to the best start,
but, however, the trip must go on, and so we are going to do everything possible to make it happen.
All right. We need to make the best of it for the kids, and you will stay inside,
and when the little kids don't want to do stuff, you can stay with them, and I'll
do the things with the big kids. Even though I've been diagnosed with pneumonia,
Amber's going to step up, and we're going to swap roles. The trip's going to go on. She's
going to do the snow skiing and all the activities. I'm going to be the cook,
while I'm looking after the little kids when they're not wanting to do activities or whatnot,
so we're still going to have a good time. I bought me a puzzle. Okay, and so, therefore,
I have to put on my big girl panties, and I have to go skiing, tubing, and ziplining.
You're going to wear panties this time? How's that going to fit in the car,
that giant bag? That's what we're working on. When you are a family of seven, you have to
pack very... Winter clothes are really big and thick. ...concisely, especially when you're going
on a ski trip. Don't terrorize him. What are y'all doing? Mama's got bugs in her hair.
Stop! Stop! I'm going to hit you on your butt. Why do I need a vacuum?
To watch. Watch what happens. What? Like what? What did that thing do? I was a little worried
that we weren't going to be able to get everything in the van, because I knew that we had to keep the
center aisle open for Jesse, so props to Big Daddy for thinking about the vacuum bags.
Worked perfect, fit right under the seats, put all the boots in a tote, shoved the tote in the van,
got suitcases. All right, what else do we have? I don't know. That one suitcase,
stools. Bring me kitchen stools. Okay. We never know when we're going to a place
exactly how the accommodations are going to be, so we try to prepare by bringing our stools.
We're staying in a regular hotel, and usually the hotel pretty much vets us, and we're able to
make do. However, if it's a lengthy trip, we will bring our stools along,
and it just helps make things more comfortable for Amber and I, and also allows the kids to be
more independent. I'm ready to go skiing. Come on, Jesse. Let me get in first. Shut up. Shut up.
Let me start this off. I'm excited about seeing the cabin, because my parents have told me this
cabin is very big, and I'm excited about Elizabeth. Shut up. You shut up. Get in.
How am I going to fit? I don't know. You tell me. We should have let the dog in. You just got
to walk in. Sometimes we'll take a really long car ride. We bring pillows and blankets, and
sometimes we sleep in the car. But hopefully this car ride will go fast and smooth, and we'll get
there on time. When we're going to North Carolina, that's kind of long. It's only like six or seven
hours. I have a suitcase right in front of me. Hopefully we can break the speed limit and go
there in like two seconds. Everybody buckle up. So how long is the drive? Four hours.
Daddy, I spy something red. Taz, we're trying. You stink. I've got to poop. I've got to pee-pee.
We'll pull over. Taking a road trip with five kids can be exhausting. I really gotta go. I really
gotta get the van parked. Somebody is always tired, or hungry, or bored, or has to go pee.
And more often than not, that someone is always ours. Thank you. All right, let's go to the bathroom
guys. Let's go. Come on, Jessie. This way. Jessie, no. Come on. We're not even halfway there. We still
we still have a while. I know. Come on. Let's get this trip over with. We're at some rest stop.
Well, do they have beds here? Do they? No. Why is it called a rest area? Ah, good one.
What the heck? What's the matter? Dang it. Dang it. Is it in park? Your fault. Yeah, it's in park.
The van won't crank. And it appears as though the battery's dead because none of our lights are
coming on or anything. Your fault. Did you leave your lights on? And I'm not sure what we're going
to do at this point. We're not getting anything. There's no lights on the inside. Somebody might
not shut the door and we have a dead battery. Now we're stuck halfway, and we can't afford
all this extra added expense and to be able to move forward with the trip. The following month,
we spoke on the phone a couple of times, and then the phone conversations got a little bit- A couple
times every day. And in May, Amber called me and invited me and my sister to a luau that her family
hosted every Memorial Day weekend. So I think the luau is pretty much where we hit it off.
They kind of titled us as a boyfriend and girlfriend. What is the secret for that? You
keep it that long. Just listen. Be a good listener. They call it workshop, okay? You know workshop?
What's that? When you work and you shop.
But I do believe that when she got sick, that was probably when it all really started.
As a little person, I had to undergo the frame of magnet decompression surgery.
It's a common surgery with achondroplasia. Symptoms are progressive, but in my situation,
it came on extremely fast. My whole left side wasn't functioning. I was losing vision,
and I did almost die. And Trent, he was at my bedside through all of it. And for him to stick
through that and the possibility when the surgeon tells you that she might not be able to walk,
she might not be- All these things. And he was still staying there. I definitely knew at that
point that he was the one that I wanted to be with for the rest of my life.
This is good, babe. This is good. I love you. I love you.
Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Very good. Thank you.
I need a rag. If I get up, then I have to fix this chair. Y'all got to edit all this out.
It's fine. You don't have to tuck him behind you. Don't laugh at this old man.
No, I'm good. It kind of pulls my strings sometimes.
Y'all want to sit here? Y'all want to sit here?
Let's get up here first. Sit down so he can sit down.
Can you believe we got out of the house with no kids? Who's got yours? I don't know. It doesn't
matter. When was the last time you went clubbing with- Last time I went clubbing with you two
was before we had kids.
We have never gone wine dancing together. His wine dancing days were
prior to us dating- Friends.
With other friends. Right.
I know you've never dated anyone besides Trent, but have you ever dated an average-sized woman?
I have had some-
Yeah, go ahead. Share.
I've had some tall girlfriends throughout high school, and I've had a few little people
girlfriends, you know? You have to weigh both sides at the table to see which one is, you know,
you're most attracted to. I was lucky enough to find me a little one, and that's that.
Yeah, no kid.
You know, I got my boots on, polished the bottoms of them, so
tonight there's a good chance the dance floor might catch on fire.
I gotta get my wiggle down.
Wine dancing did not come as easy as I thought it would.
I need a beer.
It's been a long time though.
A long time.
All right, that was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.
Can't wait to see you on the bull either.
That bull can't wait to see me.
Amber and I hardly ever go out on a date without the kids.
I think it was a good time for us to get away and have a night out
alone. I'm gonna leave my top on for this one.
Date night lately usually has been going to store to buy tools or buy something for the house.
And that's a good date when we go buy tools.
Yeah, okay.
Tallest man there couldn't figure out a way how to get on the bull.
He needed the short guy of the bunch to get him up on the bull.
Can you go in the bathtub and get dish soap?
Yeah.
You may have to ride the ABCs.
No, I'm not going to ABC, but I'll do letter count.
Oh.
Take off my shirt, mommy.
Take off your shirt?
I'm hot.
No.
You can go take off your shoes.
It's not that, my whole entire body's sweating.
Hey, Amber.
What?
Hey, I got you a surprise.
You have to close your eyes.
Here, just turn around on your stool and sit down and close your eyes.
Okay.
I wanna see it.
Oh, shoot.
If it's a kiss, I'm gonna go.
Close your eyes.
Are you ready?
Open your eyes.
I'll be right back.
I gotta go get it.
Close your eyes, for real.
When Trent told me that he wanted to surprise me on Valentine's Day,
I honestly had no idea what the surprise was gonna be.
Are your eyes closed?
Yes.
Are you sitting down?
Yes.
It's not very often I surprise.
It's not very often that he surprises,
but it's not very often that we really get each other or anything.
So I was surprised that he was going to surprise me.
Keep your eyes closed.
Ta-da.
Holy cow.
Oh, my gosh.
It's a dishwasher.
I know.
Hallelujah, praise Jesus.
We got a tank.
Oh, my God, I'm so happy.
Oh, my gosh, and it's the one that I wanted.
Thank you.
When I opened my eyes to see what he was bringing in,
I was definitely shocked.
I was excited and happy and wondering,
how in the world did he do this?
Because I know how much that cost,
and I was, like, super surprised that he pulled this off.
This is awesome.
Someday we will have matching fridge and stuff,
and a nice countertop to go over.
Normal circumstances, it probably wouldn't be the most romantic thing
to get a dishwasher for Valentine's Day,
but in our situation, I find it very romantic,
and it will even be more romantic
when he's the one putting the dishes in the dishwasher.
Being a stay-at-home mom for five kids,
you know, it has its challenging moments.
Elizabeth and Anna.
Ma'am.
Y'all working on homework and stuff?
Yeah.
All right, I'm going to start dinner.
Let's go, let's go.
Yee-haw.
I'm like Cabo.
Lord.
Weeknights are incredibly busy at our house.
Cooking dinner.
Jonah has soccer.
The little kids are in karate.
The dog needs taken care of.
Our household, with having seven,
is something that, you know,
definitely has to be orchestrated efficiently.
It's definitely a chore.
I'm not one that personally enjoys cooking.
Let me just give it a minute.
I try to get it done and get it done quickly,
have everything cleaned up and back in order super fast.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Do your homework.
I don't work.
You do.
Amber, what on earth?
Oh my gosh.
Somebody break a window?
Our kitchen is really a complete disaster
and I am honestly at my wits end.
Did you pull it out normal or did you yank on it?
I just pulled it out normal.
The whole thing fell out.
The cabinet door fell off too, finally.
This one's been loose.
I've been telling you that.
Fell off and broke.
There was nothing wrong with this.
I heard a big old crash.
So what is it at?
What does she act like?
That was you, you were...
Well, she was like,
I don't know, we need to get this kitchen ready.
She was like throwing her hands.
No, she was like, do it, Lana.
You like your expression.
Yes, she stands up and she goes, it's like, Trish.
What?
I don't know how it is.
Right now, I think we,
we're just gonna have to put other projects on hold
and work on this kitchen.
Yeah, it's not gonna work.
It's impossible to do three meals a day,
every day with this.
And now I gotta clean up this, so.
So what are you gonna do, just tear them all out?
I'm sure I'd love to do that,
but we can't afford to do that.
We need to, we'll try to work on them ourselves
and maybe refinish them and stuff.
I'm not doing this.
Will y'all help mama?
It seems like right now in this kitchen
that once one thing starts breaking,
there's a chain reaction.
So kitchen's just going downhill.
The kitchen's a pothole
and we just need to bite the bullet and fix it.
Are we going to do pizza tonight?
I don't know.
You're a lot of help.
I'm sorry, I mean it.
Order pizza, I'll clean up this.
Let's do pizza.
Yes!
Can I have a plate please?
I want some plates.
Okay.
Why are we all sitting here?
We're gonna watch TV.
Because we can't fit around the table in there.
Let's sit here.
All of a sudden everything's just becoming difficult.
It's a nuisance, it surely is.
This is fabulous dinner.
Alex, did you tear up the drawer so we can do this?
So your guy's birthday's coming up
and you're almost turning...
You're almost close to 40.
Our birthdays are a week apart.
I am turning 36.
And I am turning 26.
You are not.
And he is turning 39,
which buddy, 40 is right around the corner.
So we're like, five of us,
we're like thinking if we can make stuff for y'all
like on y'all's birthday, like a birthday breakfast,
or like make a party for y'all.
I'm the king, I should do nothing.
Something like that.
You better do it fast
because mom's got big plans of tearing out that kitchen.
Typically we don't celebrate our birthdays,
but his is on St. Patrick's Day,
so if either of our birthdays get celebrated more,
it's probably his for that reason.
She married a real live leprechaun.
I found the gold at the end of the rainbow.
We're all gonna dress up as leprechauns.
Who said you had to dress up?
You might look like one.
Ugh, no.
We're definitely not getting each other birthday gifts this year.
We're going to put everything we have towards the house.
I'd just like to say that I'm getting her the same thing this year
as I got her last year.
And it doesn't cost money, does it?
It doesn't cost money.
Come on, Alex, you're still eating that?
Alex, please don't make yourself sick.
Goodbye.
Come on.
Come on, Alex.
Come on, keep coming on.
Wait, we have more pizza?
You guys ready to have fun?
My elbows hurt.
You can still run if you're hungry.
Yeah, I don't think your elbows are necessary for running.
Joan and I have signed up to run a mile race, the fun run.
So I brought the whole family along with me to train with me,
participate, have some fun, and get me prepared for this run.
That was easy.
What's the beach bag for?
We're going to do some conditioning.
Conditioning.
Yeah.
Back in the day, I was in pretty good shape.
I used to work out a lot.
I was an athlete in high school.
I was on the wrestling team and it kept me in good shape.
But now that 40 is right around the corner from me,
I'd like to get back in shape.
It's important for myself and for my health,
but also to be in good shape for the kids as they get older.
I got my new running shoes on.
Okay.
Are you guys ready?
Yes.
On your mark, get set, run!
My dad's not in terrible shape,
but I mean, he's not in the best shape to run this race.
So that's why we're training a couple of days before the race starts,
just so he won't pass out or spray in something.
All right, this is too hard.
This is too hard.
You're already giving up?
Can I be the coach now?
You're going to be the coach?
Alex just thought he had to be the coach and the man with the whistle.
Come on, guys.
Keep going.
He was on board, but he just wasn't going to exert a lot of energy.
I was ahead in the first time.
I was ahead.
You were?
I think you might've made it 50 feet.
I don't really know what competitiveness is.
It just comes to me, I guess.
Okay.
All right, I'll tell you how to start.
I didn't say start yet.
Sorry, coach.
Ready, set.
And give me 15.
I don't have my wallet on me.
I want to do 50.
50?
Okay.
One, two, three.
That boy's got wings on him.
He can run.
What's mama doing?
Looks like she's loving the ball.
I don't know what you're doing.
Good job, guys.
Thank you.
I'm hungry.
Okay.
You're hungry, of course.
Let's head to the van.
Good job, guys.
My biggest goal for this fun run is not to finish last.
I want to cross the finish line.
I don't care if there's one person behind me.
All right, now we gotta go find these calories.
Everybody, let's go to get ice cream.
