This hummingbird, known simply as the Snowcap can be found in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

The reddish bronzy brown color of the male is distinctive in the hummingbird world and its crown is a contrasting bright snowy white. The face and underparts are black with a reddish purple gloss. The tail has bronze central feathers and the others have white bases with black ends.

The females are rather plain and have green backs and the throat, chest and abdomen are white. Their tails are bronze, black and white.
