A great ancient monument was never built by stone alone. Behind every massive wall, remote sanctuary, or engineered city stood another structure that has almost completely disappeared: the system required to keep it functioning. Workers needed food every day. Tools had to be produced and repaired. Timber, water, fuel, rope, and building materials had to arrive at the right place and at the right time. Roads connected sources to construction sites, storage areas absorbed seasonal shortages, and thousands of ordinary tasks had to continue while the monument slowly rose. Most of this infrastructure was less durable than the architecture it supported, so the spectacular part survived while the machinery of daily organization faded away.
