In Ellie's introductions to this song in the past she has said it is about the "shrinking of rural America". I think it could apply more widely to lost values and pride in urban areas and in other countries too. Of course how you interpret a song is up to the listener and it may not align with what the writer was thinking. Take Sheltered for example. In the intros to that song Ellie has shared how it was about them being homeschooled and how that experience nurtured them and let them grow strong together and learn music. In later introductions she broadened the message to say the take away was that being different and not growing up as 'the cool kids' being popular doing sports was OK. In the UK where homeschooling is not common practice, those broader messages and song take-aways are still relevant though.
