Ohio may look ordinary from the surface — but underground, it is anything but.

Beneath the state are vanished river systems, buried Ice Age valleys, massive groundwater reserves, caves, abandoned mines, ancient marine rock, and a surprising history of earthquakes. Scientists have documented more than 160 felt earthquakes in Ohio’s recorded history, while the ancient Teays River system still influences groundwater beneath modern communities.

In this video, DiscoverTube investigates 20 discoveries hidden beneath Ohio.

We explore rivers that disappeared underground, aquifers buried beneath hundreds of feet of glacial sediment, salt mines beneath Lake Erie, sinkholes and karst, abandoned mine collapse, the damaging 1937 Anna earthquake, ancient tropical seas, fossil-rich rocks around Cincinnati, Ohio Shale and radon, and the hidden geology supporting cities like Columbus.

Ohio’s surface may seem quiet.

But beneath it are multiple lost landscapes stacked on top of one another — ancient oceans, vanished rivers, Ice Age deposits, groundwater systems, mines, and an active crust.
