Today we are making easy homemade salmon patties using canned salmon, fresh dill, lemon, and pantry staples. Canned salmon recipes are an awesome, budget friendly way to make a delicious fish sandwich right at home without spending a fortune at the store. If you have ever wanted to learn how to make salmon patties that turn out golden brown, crispy on the outside, and super flavorful, this simple skillet salmon patty burger recipe is going to be your new go to dinner idea.

These canned salmon cakes come together in just a few minutes, making them the ultimate easy weeknight dinner recipe. We mix everything in one bowl, shape them into patties, and cook them up in a hot skillet until they get that perfect crust. You can serve them up as a crispy salmon burger on a toasted bun with fresh lettuce, pickles, and tartar sauce, or keep it lighter and serve them right over a bed of greens as a low carb meal prep lunch.

Cooking fish at home does not have to be fancy or complicated, and like I always say, if I can cook it, so can you! Follow along with the step by step video to see how easily these salmon cakes come together, plus watch our kitchen helpers supervise the whole cooking process.

Ingredients
1 can salmon (14.75 oz canned salmon)
Half cup plain breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons fresh dill
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 whole lemon (zested)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 large egg
1 clove garlic (or garlic powder, measure with your heart)
Half teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
Cooking spray oil for the pan
Burger buns
Fresh lettuce
Pickles (optional for topping)
Tartar sauce or dill mayo (optional for topping)
Cheese (optional for topping)

Tips and Tricks
🐟 Squeeze as much liquid as you can out of the canned salmon before mixing so your patties do not get too soggy.
🦴 Do not worry about the soft bones inside canned salmon because they are totally edible and soft, but you can pick them out if you want to.
🥣 If your mixture feels too dry to form into patties, splash in a tiny bit of water at a time until it holds together nicely.
🍞 If your salmon mixture feels too wet and sticky, just sprinkle in a few extra breadcrumbs to absorb the moisture.
✋ Use your hands to really fold and press the mixture together because it binds together so much easier that way.
⏰ Cook for 4 full minutes on the first side without touching or flipping so that nice golden crust can set up without breaking.
🍳 Spray the tops of the patties with cooking oil before flipping them over to keep them from sticking.
🥗 Skip the bun and serve these salmon cakes over a bed of fresh lettuce or garden salad for a great lunch option.
🧀 Throw a slice of cheese on top like Jamie does if you love a good classic cheeseburger style fish sandwich.
🥫 Try substituting canned tuna in place of the canned salmon if you want an easy homemade tuna patty instead.
🧊 You can wrap leftover patties in freezer paper and freeze them for easy meal prep dinners later in the month.

Kitchen Helpers
🐾 Eleanor made sure to stay right on kitchen watch duty to see what kind of fish mom was playing with today.
🐾 Kira was hanging out just outside the kitchen doorway making sure she did not miss any delicious food smells coming from the counter.
🐾 Both girls got to taste test a tiny little bite of salmon in their bowls because fish smells are impossible to ignore.
🐾 We definitely miss our best kitchen helper ever Memphis, but the girls still did an amazing job supervising all of the cooking.
