Situated on the North Eastern side of Dartmoor close to the River Teign, Chagford is a small market town that grew in size due to the wool trade. In 1305 it was made a 'Stannary Town' - one of only four such towns in Devon. This meant that it became an administrative centre for the weighing and quality testing of tin and then subsequent taxation. Wander round the quiet streets to admire the thatched cottages and attractive houses. In the market square, there is the eight sided market house built in 1862 and known locally as 'The Pepperpot'. Add to that a Grade 1 listed church and some spectacular scenery and you may decide that it is a place for you to visit.
