James Webb has found hundreds of mysterious “little red dots” in the early universe.
One of them may be something astronomers have never observed before: a black hole star.
MoM-BH*-1 produces a spectral signature that ordinary populations of stars struggle to explain. One team found that the data can be reproduced by a roughly 100,000-solar-mass black hole hidden inside an enormous dense envelope of hydrogen — a real-world version of the theoretical “quasi-stars” proposed nearly two decades ago.
If correct, objects like this could help explain how supermassive black holes grew so quickly after the Big Bang.
But another team has proposed a very different answer: the little red dots may instead be active galactic nuclei buried inside galaxies whose outer structure becomes invisible at enormous distances.
