Hidden somewhere in Portugal stands an abandoned palace with a story stretching back almost 500 years. 🇵🇹

Behind its decaying walls, generations of one noble family left behind an extraordinary collection of personal belongings: painted portraits, family photographs, coats of arms, antique furniture, books, religious artifacts, games, clothing and even a private chapel dating back centuries.

The estate can be traced back to Catarina de Chaves, who established the family property in the 1500s. Over the centuries, it remained connected to the same family line before eventually becoming associated through marriage with the Counts of Avilez.

Today, however, that legacy is in serious danger.

Entire floors have already collapsed. Ceilings are failing, wooden structures are giving way, and several rooms seem to be only years — perhaps even months — away from disappearing forever.

Yet somehow, so much of the family's story still survives inside.

Today, we document it before even more is lost.
