Four French Rafale fighter jets landed at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska on Tuesday after flying an Arctic route through Greenland for the first time as part of France’s Pégase 26 deployment. According to Associated Press the route gives the French Air and Space Force another option for reaching the Indo-Pacific while allowing crews to train in Arctic conditions. The flight from Istres Air Base in southern France to Alaska took nearly 11 hours and included five air-to-air refuelings. Air-to-air refueling allows the Rafales to cover long distances without landing. Over the course of Pégase 26, the fighter jets are expected to log around 80 hours of transit time as the deployment moves from the Arctic to the Indo-Pacific and later to the Near and Middle East. “For the first time, we are taking the High North route, the one that goes through Greenland,” said Gen. Julien Sabéné, commander of Pegase 26. Operating in the Arctic presents challenges for crews, including changing weather, long distances and a limited number of airfields. France also sees the Arctic route as an alternative way of reaching the Indo-Pacific and French overseas territories if other routes become unavailable during a crisis. The deployment brings together Rafale fighter jets, A330 MRTT Phénix tankers and A400M Atlas transport aircraft, allowing the French Air and Space Force to move aircraft, personnel and equipment over long distances. At Eielson, French crews will train with the U.S. Air Force, including alongside F-16 and F-35 fighter jets. The training is aimed at improving the ability of French and U.S. forces to operate together. The Rafales also carried mock weapons during the flight. Sabéné said the mock-ups reproduce some of the aerodynamic effects of carrying weapons and allow pilots to train in more realistic conditions. “Our objective is to train the way we would fight tomorrow,” Sabéné said. During Pegase 26, crews will operate in very different environments, from Arctic conditions in Alaska to tropical and desert environments later in the deployment. Pegase 26 involves around 300 French military personnel, four Rafale fighter jets, three A330 MRTT Phénix tanker aircraft and two A400M Atlas transport planes. The deployment runs from Sept. 8 to Oct. 15 and includes training and exercises with several allied and partner countries.
