Thousands of years before telescopes existed, ancient people were already aligning monumental structures with the movement of the Sun, engraving maps of the heavens onto metal, and recording eclipses, comets, and celestial events they believed could predict war, harvests, or the fate of kings. Many of these structures and artifacts still survive, yet their true purpose is not always clear. Were they precise astronomical observatories, sophisticated calendars, or parts of divination systems we only partly understand? Archaeology suggests that ancient civilizations did not look to the sky merely to measure time. In some cases, they seem to have been searching for messages written among the stars.
