The Detroit Symphony Orchestra first performed Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 in December 1916, conducted by Weston Gales, and Peer Gynt Suite No. 2 in April 1924, conducted by Victor Kolar. The orchestra most recently performed both suites in 2007 under the direction of Arild Remmereit.
About the Piece
In 1874, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg was invited to write incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. The production premiered in 1876 to great acclaim, and after a successful revival in 1885, Grieg assembled two orchestral suites from the score to bring the music to a wider audience. Today, the suites are among the most recognizable works in classical music.
Inspired by the adventures of the title character, the suites trace scenes from Ibsen's drama through vivid orchestral storytelling. Suite No. 1 features the radiant "Morning Mood," the heartfelt "Åse's Death," the graceful "Anitra's Dance," and the thrilling "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Suite No. 2 continues the journey with "The Abduction of the Bride (Ingrid's Lament)," "Arabian Dance," "Peer Gynt's Homecoming," and "Solveig's Song."
About the Composer
Edvard Grieg is Norway's best-known composer and a leading figure of the Romantic era. Drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk traditions, Grieg developed a musical voice known for its memorable melodies, colorful orchestration, and vivid storytelling. His Peer Gynt music remains one of the most frequently performed orchestral works in the classical repertoire.
