This hisorical novel centers on the life and reign of the twelfth century king of France, Philip Augustus. He was the first monarch to call himself 'King of France' rather than 'King of the Franks' and is credited with increasing French territories, partly as a result of war with King John of England. He was active in the Crusades, in a conflict with Pope Otto IV and later Pope Innocent III. His reign laid the foundation for later wealth and successes of the French Crown. The novel deals with the politics of the era and the personal struggles of Philip and his wife, Agnes, as well as other historical figures.
