I really like what this one has to offer, but there is a but, I see a few potential
issues that could possibly be deal-breakers.
Samsung Tech has done it again, they've given us some ear candy over the years in
their Media One line and I think they're trying to do it again in the form of this
MX5BT studio monitor and yes, the BT in the name means Bluetooth and we're definitely
going to get into more of that later, but here's what I like about Samsung.
Over the years, they've given us some really high quality products at some ridiculously
low prices, but on the flip side, they're constantly innovating and improving on stuff,
but still keep the price low.
I am a little bit suspect of you Samsung because I'm not sure how is it that you're going
to make money while innovating, making high quality products, but at the same time, you
know, keep the price so ridiculously low.
I got my eyes on this Samsung because that's a little suspect, but we're definitely going
to jump into this box and see what does this Media One MX5BT has to offer.
We're going to talk about what it can do, how does it sound, the sound quality and definitely
we're going to ask the question, we're going to answer the question, who is it for?
Yeah, is it worth your money?
So let's get it.
So that's what the presentation looks like and in the box, you get this user manual,
you get this connection cable and then you also get this power cord, a couple of accessories.
These look, actually look a little bit bigger than I expect them to be.
All right, so we finally got them out of the box and as you can see, I mean, Samsung always
go with an understated look, but then this finish is also specifically designed so that
it can almost blend with any kind of decor.
And it's black, so almost any decor, this will just sit in.
And I mean, it is MDF wood.
These cabinets are made out of with this vinyl wrap over it.
And then it's almost like this front panel right here.
The front baffle is made from some kind of plastic material.
Then you have the base port around here.
I like the design.
It's pretty deep also.
Definitely won't get any chuffing from that.
It comes in two different flavors.
You have the MX3BT, which is the smaller version that has a three inch woofer and the larger
version, which is MX5BT that comes with a five and a quarter inch woofer and a silk dome tweeter,
which is the one that I have here.
40 watts per channel, which means total output power of 80 watts, which is a massive output.
And we're definitely going to check it out and see how much power is that pushing and
how does it perform?
You know, it is a nail free monitor, so definitely got to keep that in mind also.
And I mean, this thing comes with a lot of inputs.
As you can see here, right on the back, you have the RCA input coming from the top to
the bottom, which is unbalanced.
And then you have the balanced quarter inch input right here.
And then down here, you have an aux input.
And then you have right here, you have two dual pole dials right here for the bass and
the treble impedance adjustment, you know, for highs and lows, just in case you want
to adjust the bass and the treble to correct it for your room, sitting on your desk, you
know, or just for your preference in sound.
Overall, and one of the things, like I said earlier, this is the BT, which means Bluetooth.
So right here, you have a dedicated Bluetooth button.
So you can just tap that and you're instantly connected to your smartphone, tablet, or if
you just want to wirelessly connect to your computer or whatever device you're using.
And yeah, you got the power switch right here.
And right here, you got that figure eight plug and some detail info along with the output
to the slave.
And this one is the master.
On the front, you have the dial right here for up and down, as well as you have output
jack right here, aux for headphones, just in case you want to do a more intimate listening
while you're either mixing or listening or whatever it is.
There you go on the back of the slave right here, just the input.
But now that we have like tour this thing, what we got to do right now is we got to set
it up, book it up and do a sample demo.
I'm never going to take it over to my desk, but let's set it up and check it out and see
what does it sound like?
And then then we can determine if this is worth your money and your time.
All right, so I went ahead and I got this thing plugged in and I connect this six feet
connection cable from the master to the slave.
And what I would do is right here is I'm going to try to use Bluetooth first because I'm
definitely going to do some more tests on my desk wired, you know, trying to use the
balance and balance and aux and just to see.
But for now, we're definitely going to work with Bluetooth and go ahead and tap the Bluetooth
button.
All right, so I have this thing connected and I have my favorite test track queued up.
It's Sweet by Joakim Karud.
I'm going to go ahead and play that track, but what I'm going to do, I'm going to turn
these around so they can face me because this is where the microphone is.
But if I want to get the full effect, so let's go ahead and hit play.
She got that sweet juice, some lemonade, some of that lemonade.
Take a sip.
Blowing purple clouds, tastes like lemonade.
Conversations back and forth like damn, we could go on for days.
Looking back at it like damn, she bad when she walk away.
Here we go, bananas roll.
They already know.
When we go on tour, I'll take you anywhere you want to go.
People talk about us like they understand just what this is.
I'm actually really surprised, Samsung.
I'm actually really surprised.
I mean, I know Samsung make good stuff.
You already saw me test out the M50BT a couple of years back and this is the MX5BT.
It's a similar footprint and a similar name, but it's definitely, this one is definitely kicking.
I'm actually really surprised.
I tell you what, I'm going to take this thing over to my desk.
I'm going to do a whole bunch of different tests.
I'm going to come back to you with the final verdict.
It's a few seconds for you.
It's definitely probably going to be a few hours or a couple of days for me, but yeah,
we're going to definitely check that out.
I'm going to come right back.
All right, so we're back from testing this thing.
I had it on my desk for a couple of days and I was just putting it through a battery of
tests, you know, just to get a feel of what it is fully capable of doing.
And I really like what this one has to offer for the price, but there is a but.
I see a few potential issues that could possibly be deal breakers, but let's talk about what
this thing has to offer and what, you know, some of those potential issues could be.
First of all, I think the question on everyone's mind is what kind of sound quality does the
MX5BT deliver?
And I have to say it actually delivers some clear, balanced audio with some tight, deep
response from the five and a quarter inch woofer and the silk dome tweeters delivers
some nice, clear detail highs for the price point.
It's not that analytical flat response that you would expect from some more expensive
monitors.
I mean, I believe that the people who this is intended for is never going to enjoy it
and find it useful during their jam session.
So here's one of the first issues I could definitely hear where this one's limitations
are, because even though the bass is so tight, rich and punchy, it doesn't have that slam
and impact that will pressurize a room, especially if you're trying to do a mix.
So you can actually get a realistic feel of how it would perform when that track is being
played in the party or in the club.
This one is not going to give you that vibe since it doesn't have that sub bass response
that would help you to discover where you would need to adjust some of those frequencies
for that track to perform.
But however, it does have enough juice that if you're just trying to do a regular jam
session, it could give you enough punchy bass response to make you feel that vibe, you know,
just in case you want to get in that zone and do a really quick, fun project.
Another thing that I discover is that when you're connected to this one via Bluetooth
and then you also connect the aux or any one of the other ports, what's going to happen
is you can simultaneously play media from both sources at the same time and the sounds
will clash coming over the same speaker.
It's no biggie, but I just thought it was worth mentioning just in case, you know, you
didn't know and you might have this one connected to your phone and you're probably playing
something from your laptop or wherever and then you probably get a notification or something
or someone starts calling you and your phone starts ringing in your speakers while you're
listening to a jam session, you might start to get surprised like, oh, you know, so I
just thought I'd mention it, you know, but like I said, no big deal.
So, I mean, I guess we have to conclude and say who is the MX5 BT speaker from the medium
one line and I think it's basically for anyone who definitely don't have any critical client
work that they're working on, you're just working on some really fun projects, personal
projects that it could definitely work for you.
This one, I believe for anyone who just want to work on some fun projects, content creation
or just multimedia purpose overall, watching movies, TV shows, this will definitely work
out perfect for you in that case and if that's what you're on, you know, and you're looking
at this one, especially because of the price point, then yeah, I would say it's a really
good choice in that aspect.
Is there better out there?
Yes, but usually if you're looking at this one, it's because you're on a budget and you
want to find one of the best options and I would say this one can definitely deliver
for the price.
