The Florist Secret Behind the “Floating” Flower Arrangement

In this step-by-step floral design tutorial, I'll show you how to create this popular garden-style arrangement using a low vessel, a pin frog, chicken wire, foliage, seed pods, and sunflowers.

Floating and meadow-style floral arrangements are perfect for wedding ceremonies, aisle markers, tablescapes, mantels, and events where you want a natural, garden-inspired look. The best part? You don't need a tall vase or complicated mechanics—the finished design completely hides the vessel and floral mechanics.

For this design, I'm using oakleaf hydrangea foliage, variegated Solomon's seal, eucalyptus, Queen Anne's lace seed pods, coleus, flowering oregano, and a beautiful sunflower called Darjeeling.

One of the biggest lessons in this design is knowing when to break the traditional rules of floral design. Instead of following the usual proportion guideline of making an arrangement one-and-a-half times the height of the vase, we're creating a much taller design from a very low vessel.

The goal is a floral arrangement that feels natural, loose, airy, and meadow-like—as though the flowers are actually growing out of the ground.
