I asked strangers if i could take their picture and film them. stranger taught his 6 year old how to surf! #stranger #streetphotography #surf
I want to give some footage to some people for free or maybe take a photo. This is so cute.
Capture some people here fishing. Hello. Hi, is this your duck? I guess now he is.
He's not afraid of me. He's so cute. Excuse me sir, is that your son? Yeah. Is he going out to
I came out here just to get some cool footage. Is it cool if I record it? Oh sure, sure. I'll give
you guys the photos I capture. Oh he's fine with that. What's your name? Hopefully he surfs well.
My name is Christian. Safi, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. I'm assuming you taught him
how to surf. Yeah, yeah I have. He's just getting out over here. That kid's really good. He just
got out. Right there? Yeah, the guy just got out. Yeah, you're coming to shoot surfers, huh? Just
today, yeah? Yeah, cool. Let's see, the waves are nice. Yeah. How long have you been surfing for? Oh god,
I've got a lot of gray hair my whole life. You look like a young person.
Did you learn at his age? Yeah, that guy right here. Did anyone teach you or did you teach
yourself? I'm from New York, so when I was his age there were not many surfers in New York.
People surf in New York? Yes, and the waves could get very good, but it's very cold,
so I had to teach myself. Why did you guys come this way then? Is the waves better here? Yeah,
yeah, yeah. Nice winter, you know. Let's see, I think you're gonna like the footage I get, I'm
sure. All right. Let's see. He just told me that could give some clips and I was like, oh I got
you, dude. I got you. Look, I'll show you. It's because it's too cold for me right now.
He was like... See, it looks pretty good. I don't know if... I'm sure if he stands I'll get a good
one. Oh yeah, oh you got the real deal. Trying. I gotta get all this stuff because he's been
harassing me. I gotta start taking photos of him, so I was like, well I need to get a real camera.
How come you're not riding with him today? Because it's too cold right now. I'm gonna
surf tomorrow. I don't want my wetsuit all wet. Oh, the waves are good. I hope he lets you. You
see how it works though right here, this wave. So the sets come and they wrap around the wave
and with the short borders we wait for it to turn into this A-frame, right? See how it's like
turning into like almost a little triangle? Yeah. And then you ride the waves.
What's the rules for him to like... There's a lineup right there, right? Yeah, yeah. Are those
guys up in the front right there by the rock on the left going? It's kind of a little pandemonium
right now to be honest. But yeah, there's a bit of a lineup. Oh, this is another buddy out there.
So looks like I need to... They're the local kids. Looks good. That's his buddy right there. I mean,
my eyes are not that good, but I can zoom in right here. This probably right here. That kid's very
good he's talking to right now. Is that him right here on my camera? Well, let me see if I can see
him. The kid is paddling right there, yeah. Let's see. But see how the wave and then it kind of
breaks in here. Yeah. Yeah, see how that turns into a little triangle? I see, yeah. And see how
now this is called a right? It goes this way, but this guy's going to catch. That's the main wave.
Well, I'm sure I can catch a good footage of him. If you catch something like that,
I'm sure you'll like that. Should I put it in slow motion? I think I should put it in slow motion.
Yeah, I'll put it in slow motion. Let's see. I see him. Yeah, my son's got a blackboard. It's a
little crazy right now. It's a little competitive, but it doesn't look like too many people.
Oh, for this wave, that's a lot of people. Okay. And people get a little crazy here. Yeah,
they get in a little fight. Yeah. That's a good wave. It sure is. Zion's a good surfer too.
Oh, I got the whole thing. I sent him to. Where'd your duck go? I think I sent him home for the day.
His shots are done. They all grew up together? They're actually all one age apart. Mine's the
youngest. This one's the next year. That one's the next year. What's it like having a son?
Oh, they drag you all around to do this in the cold. That's why I'm standing next to you. Is it
true that you could mold your son or is it some unique person that you just live with? I think
that you don't try to mold them, but my wife keeps saying, because I was crazy like this,
you created a monster now that you got him into surfing, because all he wants to do is surf
nonstop. How'd you get him into something that you, is that him right here? Let's see if he
catches it. I don't know if he'll catch it. He's not going to catch it. How'd you get him to be
interested in something that you're interested in too? You know what? He never was interested
in it until a couple of years ago, but his sport is soccer. That's what he really loves.
But he loves this too. My son's only been surfing a lot for two years. He's good because he's been
pushing him into waves his entire life, but I never pressured him. And then all of a sudden,
he never wanted to do it. And then all of a sudden he had some friends and they started doing it and
he started doing it and then I don't know what happened. Now he surfs like crazy. I feel like
his friends have more influence on him than his parents. But yeah, that is. But I know a lot of
kids, if you want to have a kid and you're asking these questions because of that, I see a lot of
kids whose parents push them into these things and then they hate it. I know so many kids who
are burning out in soccer because look at this little guy. Yes. Oh my God. Oh my God. He's so
little. Yes. Wow. He's great. He's going to be a legend. Wow. That was amazing. That was amazing.
Why? You're like, who's parent is that? That was incredible. Who did that one? Yeah. Okay. Wait.
Almost. Looks like this guy took his wave. Oh yeah. My son's only surfed here like twice
so he's got to learn the wave real quickly because this is uh, there are a lot of really
sharp rocks right here. It's a reef. Yeah. And it's really, it really cuts your feet up. Oh.
Oh, he just hit his face with the board. Too much wind. Oh, he's here. That's him right there. Yeah.
He'll be very excited if you um. I got it. I got it. Get that other wave of yours. Yeah.
Is your wife also surf? Yeah. And my daughter. So this is a whole surfer family.
Our trips are surf trips. What's the best part about being a dad?
Oh, probably when your kids do cool ---- and you get to hang out with them.
Right? I wouldn't know. I'm not a dad. I'm not yelling at him. That's him? No, that's not him.
That guy's got a nice wave though. You know what it is? My son won't get one now because
there's the camera. I don't know. It's always the jinx. He thinks he knows. No, no. But I always tell
him that my video, I was like, it's always the jinx. But it's okay. He doesn't know. He doesn't
know. Hopefully he thinks I'm a stranger. He'll get one eventually. Oh look, this is the guy.
He's got the flip-flops for them out there. That was so good, right? Yeah, a little cold.
Oh my God. Six years old. Nice to meet you, sir. Great lens. I don't have the zoom for that.
500 is awesome. I only got 200. Are you Tony? Yeah. Yeah. So you got a better sense of it.
I'm doing slow motion. Yeah. Yeah. Trying to see if I get something.
Yeah. Nice rig though. Thank you. My eyes are bad. That's why I bought the big monitor.
I got a monitor like that. Oh, that's interesting. I thought that was your phone.
No, I got a monitor just like that. It helps a lot.
Oh, wow. That is a really good photo.
Oh, that's amazing. Wow. Oh, my son's screwing up. He's sitting out in the park right now.
Might be a little gassed. Oh, cool. You got it. Yes. Is that him? No, it's Zion. Oh,
wow. They really do look similar. He'll do something good though if he gets up.
He's all the way at the front back. Yeah, he's sitting out there with Daschle trying to get
the big waves, but he still doesn't know. I want him sitting inside where he gets a lot more waves.
Is this him again? Yeah. He snuck a fast inside one. See, like I slow down the shutter,
so it gives more of like a speed. It looks like it's more blurry. Yeah. So it looks like he's
going way faster than he is. Yeah, yeah. That's a nice one here. Yeah, that looks cool. Like,
look how fast that looks. It just looks so fast. It's going to 100 miles per hour. It's got that
little bit of blurriness to it, right? Exactly. Oh, it was doing that for. OK, that's wicked.
I've never seen one of these for a camera that you could just look at it like a phone.
Yeah, and it's like it helps with if you're trying to get your frame, you know.
My eyes are not great, so I sometimes get it blurry. Yeah, I have to get this whole setup
because now he's 13, but he wants more pictures. He's like, oh, I want to get sponsored. So I was
like, oh, then I have to take I have to shoot videos of him at some point. I was like, I'm
going to get this setup, right? Yeah. And then he's like, oh, you guys start shooting my soccer
for highlight reels. I'm like, instead of a surfer, dad, you're going to become cameraman,
that's it. I guess we'll have to trade. Give me your support. I'll give you this.
But I think this is especially for my eyes. So much better. Something like this. I do it.
Yeah, it's great. Put a 400 millimeter maybe. What's that one? That's a 200, 200, 400 longer.
Yeah, just more zoomed in. I'm really excited to get one more good shot of him. How'd you end up
at this at this wave? Just knew the spot. I just follow my gut most of the time. Yeah.
I was going to Santa Monica a lot and I got tired of it. Oh, trying to
take photos of surfing there? No, no, just like all around. Yeah. This is like your addiction,
huh? It has to be. Just take photos of things. And look at how much friendship. How else are
you going to talk to a stranger? That's true. It's much harder. Give yourself a reason. That's
true. And you explore new things. Look, you learn about surfing. Everybody's battling it out.
Is that him? Wow. Good job. Let's see if we got that. I'm kind of excited.
He's getting way older, the little kid. Stick with it, buddy. Stick with it.
It's going to keep going. He's got it. Come on, bro. Oh, that was good. I got that. I'm
going to go. I'll be right back. I got some cool shots of you guys. I'll send it to him.
He can send it to you guys. Of course. I got some video, too. No. Yeah. I want to capture
these guys, but I'll send it to him and then he'll send it to you guys. Thank you so much. Nice.
Oh, oh, you want to play? Hey, guys. Smile.
I caught some amazing shots of you guys in there. I'm so proud of you. That's so cool.
May I ask, how did you get him to do this? I've been taking him out since he was real small.
First on the front of my board, then bigger foam boards, and slowly to this.
Are you not afraid? No. What makes you so strong? I don't know. Do you feel strong out there or do
you feel scared out there? I feel strong. You're so strong. He's so good. Can I take a photo of
you guys and send it to you? Yeah. I can ride six footers already. What you're doing is so cool.
You know that, right? Yeah. You hold your board. What's your name? Cole. Cole. What's your name,
sir? I'm Safi. Nice to meet you, sir. Safi. Safi, like coffee. All right, Safi. I'm going to take
one right here. I'm going to print it out for you right now, too. All right. Yes. Get next to,
and then if you could put your arm around him, that'd be awesome. Yes. If you get a little
closer, maybe on this side. Yes. Perfect. Smile. Three, two, and one. Throw one of these.
I'll print it out for you now. Will you guys be here to surf a little more?
Okay. I'll be right here. I might be able to show you back. Maybe I'll publish a story. Oh,
there you go. You got the full footage and everything? Yeah. Let's see. Who's this guy?
Oh, that's his son. Okay. That's your son. That's a pretty good shot, sir. Oh, do you work
for the Malibu Times? Oh, I'm just having fun. That's you then. Oh, backside float. Yeah, that's
Ben. Oh, he's out there. All right. Bye. Yeah. I'll send it to you guys. I'm sure I have some
photos in there. Perfect. Thank you. Yeah, just send it to him. Yeah, I gave him my info.
Okay. I got to print this out for these guys. I feel like I got a full story right now.
Oh, you print some right here? Oh my God. I'm telling you, this is like fun for me.
That looks like you're like Santa showing off the present. Oh, you think that's...
I got another surprise for you. I feel like this is going to tickle you. I got a whole frame.
That is crazy. I was like, hey, if I'm going to make somebody's day today,
might as well go all out. Oh my God, it's a little guy.
I got some cool shots of you, bro. Yeah. I'll send it to you now. What's your name?
Well, let me get a photo of you guys. Is that cool? Oh, sure. Let's get the ocean on the side.
Maybe like, like right here. Put your arm around your son. Yeah. Got it. Yeah. Well,
I just got to send it to you guys. I don't know why it's being weird, but yeah, I'll send it to
you guys. Hey, we feel blessed. You're going to like the footage. Yeah. Trust me. Yeah.
No, I just came out today. Yeah. Yeah. I just was like having fun. Yeah. That's a nice camera.
Oh, thank you, bro. Yeah. I promise you'll like the footage. I hope so. I'll send it to you guys.
Yeah. Send me his IG or something too. Probably if I post it, I'll text. He's too young. He doesn't
have a good deal. That's a good thing. That's a good thing. Okay. Okay. Bye guys. Have a great
evening. It was nice meeting you. I'll text you and try to get that photo into something with
that little kid. I know I'm really trying. Let me see if this works. All right. You too.
My printer got jammed up, but I got it right in time. I thought my printer broke, but I got it
fixed right in time. Oh, thanks so much. Sophie. Here you go. Oh, take that color. Here you go.
Wow. Thank you. You like it? Yeah. Nice going. Stay healthy and safe. Of course.
Hope you guys have a good day. Thank you. Have a good one. You too, little man. And you too, sir.
I can't say I'm alone. I can't say I'm sorry for losing hope. Start again. Start again.
We're not the kids that we were.
