Rest in peace Dolly Parton, a trailblazer, fearless woman and musician who inspired so
many people with her music. I want to go now live to our Washington correspondent Jonathan
Kersley on this breaking news this morning. Jono, the President has just paid tribute to Dolly Parton.
He has, Julia. No doubt over the course of the coming hours there will be many across many
walks of life, not just here in America but around the world, who will pay tribute to
Dolly Parton, the country music queen, who as we've heard has passed away just a matter of
a short time ago at the age of 80. President Trump taking to Truth Social to confirm that
the American flag will be lowered across the country at government buildings to half-mast.
That will be effective as of less than three hours from now and it will be done so for a week. In the
post he said, very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest country singers and far beyond
ever, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone
like her and never will. In her honour, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United
States for a one-week period beginning tonight at 6pm. Rest in peace, Dolly. The world loves you.
Signing off, President Donald J Trump. Just one of countless tributes that will come in for not
only the Queen of Nashville, the Queen of American country music, but a queen to so many around the
Joining us now is news24.com.au lifestyle reporter Chloe Walker. Chloe, it's wonderful to see you.
Thank you so much for joining us once again on Power Hour. We have to start with this major
news today. Heartbreaking news that Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.
What an icon. Now, in a statement to People magazine, her team reportedly confirmed that
she died after a brief battle with cancer. But Chloe, she opened up about her health battles
in recent interviews. What did she have to say? Yeah, that's right. And the world has lost such
a bright light following the death of Dolly Parton, aged 80. Her team did confirm to People
that she passed away from cancer. They didn't specify what cancer, but Dolly herself did speak
to the outlet in an interview that was published only four days ago. She mentioned that she had
suffered with some health issues the past year following the death of her late husband, Carl
Dean. And she said that she neglected her health while she was caring for him. She did have some
kidney stones and some autoimmune issues, but she didn't touch on the cancer there. But at the same
time, she also spoke about how she still had so much life and so much left to give. And in classic
Dolly fashion, she was so charming and so full of wit and humor and said, you know, I'm still the
queen of social media. I'm still posting regularly. I've still got so much going for me with the
charities and all of her philanthropic work. And again, it's incredibly a sad loss. And it's being
felt around the globe. We've seen people from all sides of the world. I mean, Donald Trump
has, of course, announced that all of the American flags will be flown at half-mast for a week. And
then Anthony Albanese, our prime minister, released a beautiful statement reflecting back
on the time when he met Dolly in 2011 and he helped her get her roadshow across Australia.
And then we've had Eminem, we've had Reese Witherspoon, we've had Jane Fonda, all sorts of
people sharing their tributes to Dolly. And it's incredible to see.
It is really incredible to see. Even this morning before I was
arriving at work, walking past some of the cafes, people are blasting her music. I mean,
she was so, so loved. And we are seeing so many tributes on social media, so many fans out there.
She touched the lives of millions with her incredible music and her beautiful spirit.
