US President Donald Trump is blaming Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries for soaring diesel prices, and has publicly told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop the attacks. US diesel prices passed $6 a gallon on Friday, roughly 63% higher than a year ago.
Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian refineries over the past year, targeting a sector that supplies fuel to Russia's economy and military and produces petroleum products for export. But the refinery strikes aren't the only pressure on global energy markets. The conflict with Iran has also disrupted energy supplies and pushed up oil prices. So how much of the diesel price surge can really be blamed on Ukraine? How much is connected to the Middle East? And if Kyiv stopped attacking Russian refineries, would American drivers actually notice a difference? DW News speaks to Olga Khakova of the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Center about what's really driving the diesel shortage, and whether Trump's argument holds up.
