Should you use granular or liquid fertilizer in your vegetable garden? We use both, but we use them at different times for different reasons.

In this video, we’re getting our raised beds ready for fall planting and using a balanced, granular organic fertilizer to establish a good nutrient base before anything goes in the ground. We’ll explain why granular fertilizer works so well as a pre-plant fertilizer and why we prefer to save our liquid fertilizer for later in the growing season.

Once our vegetables are established and have an active root system, liquid fertilizer gives us the ability to spoon-feed plants as they grow. We can quickly deliver nutrients into the root zone and adjust our feeding depending on how the crop is growing.

We’ll also talk about different organic granular fertilizer options, what to look for in a good pre-plant fertilizer, why you shouldn’t get too hung up on the exact N-P-K numbers, and why soil testing is important when repeatedly fertilizing raised beds.
