Alameda County Alternative Response Unit hopes to expand mental health service

The Alameda County Fire Department is piloting an Alternative Response Unit (ARU) in San Leandro to handle nonviolent mental health crises. By deploying a specialized team instead of traditional police or fire rigs, the program connects vulnerable individuals with housing and medical support, reducing the burden on emergency services and providing more appropriate care for those in need.
