Faces of the Fleet Ep. 21: The Lens: Kathleen Gorby (2022) is a U.S. Navy film profiling photographer Kathleen Gorby and tracing the development of her photography from an early personal interest to a professional career in military visual communication. Gorby grew up in Ohio and was introduced to photography through a 4-H programme before discovering that the U.S. Navy offered an opportunity to train and work professionally with a camera. She became a Navy Mass Communication Specialist, a role combining still photography with video, journalism, graphic communication and public affairs. During eight years of active duty, Gorby photographed sailors, training, operations and other aspects of naval service, using photography both for public communication and as part of the Navy's official visual record. She also trained in underwater photography, combining specialist diving skills with her work as a military photographer.

After leaving full time active service, Gorby continued her military career in the U.S. Navy Reserve while developing a civilian career in public affairs with the U.S. Forest Service. Her assignments have included the Warrior Games, naval exercises, diving and salvage operations and other military activities requiring photographers to work alongside operational personnel. She also continued her education at Syracuse University and expanded her work beyond still photography into the wider field of visual communication. Released on 14 April 2022 by Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, Faces of the Fleet Ep. 21: The Lens: Kathleen Gorby provides a concise account of the contemporary Navy photographer, showing how photographic technique, journalism, digital media, public affairs and military training are combined within the role of a Navy Mass Communication Specialist.
