The Yara-ma-yha-who Sightings Haunting Australia's Forests No One Can Explain

For generations of Aboriginal children across southeastern Australia, one warning came before any other before heading home through the bush. Do not fall asleep beneath a wild fig tree. Something lives in its branches, patient enough to wait for hours, and it doesn't want to kill you. It wants to keep you.

We're pretty much tracing the legend of the Yara-ma-yha-who, a small, red, sucker-limbed being first formally recorded by David Unaipon, that drains its victims, swallows them whole, then regurgitates them shorter and redder than before. Unlike the Yowie or the Bunyip, there's no modern sighting tradition here at all, just a story detailed and consistent enough that researchers still debate what real predator, or what distant contact, first inspired it.
