This video analyzes a confusing play during a Women's Softball World Cup game between the USA and Brazil. While viewers initially believed the umpires botched a call regarding two runners occupying the same base, the narrator explains that a \"delayed dead ball\" was called due to fielder obstruction, justifying the unusual ruling.
Women's Softball World Cup had a play that everyone was very confused about.
This one's brought to you by SeatGeek.
It's USA versus Brazil.
USA's up big.
Winner gets a spot in the Olympics.
First and third, they run the first and third play, and now they're
looking at the runner on third.
I'm going to get her out.
Okay.
She's in a rundown.
So the runner on first thinks, I got to get all the way to third, but
now she almost goes in front of her.
We're still in a rundown.
They're going to get anyone out.
They're going to get no one out.
They're going to get who out?
Someone's got to be out.
They tag both and the umpire says time.
Uh, okay.
You're going to go here and you're going to go to second, which broke a lot of
people's brains because usually when there's two runners occupying the same
base, the lead runner is entitled to the base and the trailing runner is out.
So you would think that tag is useless, but then you would think this tag means
the trail runner is out.
That's not the case.
So everyone in the comments was like, they botched that call, but I couldn't
accept that a call would be botched in that manner and like no manager would
fight, no one would say anything.
I know it's seven, nothing in a pool play game, but you got to think
someone would have spoken up.
There had to be more to this.
Well, there is, but before I go to that, we should also talk about how she did
almost run in front of that runner.
Look at those feet.
Her foot is in front of the runner.
And I don't know the legality of these rules if just your foot is in front,
because if you pass the runner in front of you, you are out.
Her foot is in front, but from the side angle and this camera angle is a little
deceiving the other way, but you can see the left foot of the trail runner goes
in front, but the whole body of the other player seems to stay there.
So they don't call that.
So what happened right here on this part of the play, the lead runner is sliding
back into third base and you can see the fielder was set up on the line, which
she cannot do.
So right then, as we go, the umpire is putting out one fist out.
That is the signal for delayed dead ball.
I looked up the pictures in the manuals and confirmed it.
So she is calling delayed dead ball because of fielder obstruction.
So had that ball been caught by that player, number 56, I believe, and she
tagged the runner sliding back to third, the runner would have been safe.
No matter what, because she called obstruction, that ball is not caught and
play resumes and that's where it just gets really confusing because that call
is delayed dead ball.
So it holds.
So she ruled that there was obstruction on the base path right here.
Depending on what happens, the play could be dead here and everyone just
goes back to their base.
The play continues.
The trail runner is on third base.
The lead runner, she says, go back to second and then she doesn't go back to
second, stays there and they all stay put.
Now had the lead runner scored, the delayed dead ball obstruction would have
been washed and irrelevant, but she didn't score.
And that is why the umpire after this puts out, it says time, and she gives
that signal again with the left hand and says there was delayed obstruction.
So I don't know, it's not a blatantly wrong call.
You would just have to disagree with the judgment of the umpire, but she did make
that call and then the chaos went after that.
So in a way I thought I was going to make this video and be like, what a
ridiculous call.
How could you forget the basics?
And then actually she, you know, it's not like a quote unquote wrong call.
It's a very interesting call.
So I've cleared it up.
I know so many of you were just head in hands.
What happened?
Couldn't sleep group stage of the women's softball world cup, seven, nothing.
How could they botch such a call?
Well, maybe they didn't botch it.
I'm happy to have cleared that up for you.
