After Chaos : The Resurrection of Warsaw | GEDEON DOC
#warsaw #history #reconstruction
Warsaw, a city with two faces, almost never recovered from chaos. From September 1939, Adolf Hitler was obsessed with wiping the Polish capital off the map. Methodically and horrifically, the city and its ghetto were ravaged by the Germans throughout the war. In 1944, the Polish resistance was crushed under the cynical gaze of the Soviets, who watched from the other side of the Vistula River. When the city was finally liberated, the ruins were so extensive that the idea of relocating its reconstruction elsewhere was seriously considered. Yet, the old town, with its castle and medieval monuments, was meticulously rebuilt stone by stone, identical to its original form. Just a little further away, the Soviet imprint looms large in the form of the monumental and overwhelming Palace of Culture. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Warsaw transformed into a modern and attractive financial capital.
