Chinguetti, Mauritania, March 2002. After more than two years of preparation, Régis Belleville is about to embark on one of the most arduous journeys on the planet: crossing the Majâbat al-Koubrâ, also known as the "Desert of Deserts." This cursed territory, whose Arabic name means "the expanse of great solitude," is said to be inhabited by legendary djinns who, according to the elders, will forever retain any man who dares to venture into it.

Between his starting point in Chinguetti and his destination in Timbuktu (Mali), Régis, accompanied by his camel driver N'Taha Ould Bouessif and 8 camels, will cross over 1,150 km of dunes and sands. Along the way, they will encounter no wells, not a single point of water. They must therefore embark in complete autonomy, facing an extreme environment that pushes the limits of human and animal survival.
