The Monte Cristo Homestead Haunting Junee No One Can Explain

In 1961, a teenage boy walked onto the grounds of an abandoned Victorian mansion overlooking a small NSW railway town and shot the property's caretaker dead. He later told police he'd been inspired by a film he'd just seen, Psycho. That's only one entry on the list of tragedies attached to Monte Cristo, widely known as Australia's most haunted house.

We're pretty much tracing its history, the real, documented deaths of the Crawley family, the folklore that grew up around them, and the night in 1963 the new owners came home to find every window blazing with light, in a house that had no electricity at all. Closed to the public since January 2025 and now for sale, more than 60 years of family stewardship coming to an end.
