A new study published in Scientific Data provides a comprehensive analysis showing that Greenland and Antarctica have lost approximately 11.3 trillion tons of ice over the past five decades. Combining decades of satellite data and independent mass balance estimates, researchers revealed that this massive loss has contributed to about one inch of global sea level rise. Surprisingly, around 84% of this ice loss was driven by ocean-warmed glacier outflow rather than surface melting, highlighting how warming waters are increasingly accelerating polar ice depletion.
