On the night of 30 November 1936, the Crystal Palace, the iron-and-glass cathedral that had dazzled Britain since 1851, burned to nothing on Sydenham Hill. Around 100,000 Londoners climbed the hill to watch. Winston Churchill stood among them. The cause was never officially determined, and no public inquiry was ever held.
