In 936, a Chinese general made a deal that would reshape Chinese history for more than four centuries.

Shí Jìngtáng 石敬瑭 needed an army. The Khitan had one. Their price was extraordinary: annual tribute, the humiliating title of “Son Emperor,” and control of the Sixteen Prefectures — the mountain passes guarding northern China. He accepted.

What looked like sixteen pieces of territory was really China’s front door. Once those defenses were gone, the rich plains leading toward the Yellow River and the great northern capitals were exposed.

This is the story of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the chaotic 53 years between the Tang and Song dynasties: emperors murdered by their own sons, generals becoming kings, actors becoming governors, and one official somehow surviving ten rulers.

And the consequences didn’t end when the Song dynasty began. Song armies repeatedly tried to recover the north, the Khitan remained entrenched, and centuries later the strategic consequences were still being felt.

Chinese history isn’t just a list of dynasties.
