The Brutal Reality of the Battle of Marathon: How Did Athens Face Extinction?

In 490 BC, the entire city of Athens fell into chaos and panic as refugees from Eretria brought news of the Persian army's brutal devastation. Facing a massive fleet landing on the plains of Marathon, about 10,000 Athenian warriors and 1,000 Plataean allies had to make a life-or-death decision. Led by the strategist Miltiades, they decided to abandon the city walls to head to the open battlefield, facing directly against a force of 25,000 Persian infantry and cavalry. This video will recreate the most breathtaking and dramatic moments of the Battle of Marathon, starting with the 240km sprint of the messenger Pheidippides to desperately beg Sparta for help. Viewers will witness the destructive power as the heavily armored Hoplite formation rushed down the slope, enduring the enemy's rain of arrows to crush the enemy's flanks, creating a pincer movement that caused the Persian army to panic and flee into the mud and offshore ships. However, this bloody clash ended with a relentless, rapid march back to Athens to stop the enemy fleet aiming straight at the undefended city. Although the Battle of Marathon did not put an end to the war, it shattered the myth of invincibility of the Persian empire in life-and-death melee combat. This was the great psychological foundation for the entire Greek world before they had to face King Xerxes' vastly larger army at the deadly gates of Thermopylae 10 years later.
