Seven thousand years ago, long before the first cities, someone built a small shrine on an empty patch of ground in southern Mesopotamia.
Then they built another one directly on top of it, and another, for thousands of years, never moving from that exact spot.
When archaeologists finally dug down through the layers in the 1940s, what they found at the bottom didn't fit anything they expected.
The Sumerians themselves wrote about this place, and what they claimed happened here is one of the strangest lines in any ancient text.
