Utah tornado activity is now confirmed after the National Weather Service reported a tornado touching down on a ridge near Fruit Heights in Davis County, north of Salt Lake City. The tornado reached the ground Friday afternoon as severe thunderstorms brought large hail, strong winds and heavy rain across northern Utah.

The storm system affected multiple parts of the state from Wednesday through Friday. A hiker was killed by lightning near the summit of Mount Timpanogos, while Davis County saw scattered flooding, tree damage and hail damage to vehicles. The confirmed tornado occurred at high elevation along the Francis Peak ridgeline.

The storms developed in a warm, unstable and moisture-rich environment, with a broad low pressure system off the California coast helping provide lift across Utah. Cooler, drier air is now moving into the state, although another weather system is expected to approach the region next week.
